Identity in Multiracial British and American Society

Identity in multiracial British and American society For many years, notions of identity within British culture seemed stable and unchanging. However, according to Windrush: The Irresistible Rise of Multi-Racial Britain by Trevor Phillips and Mike Phillips, this began to change with the changing complexion of English society. England was no longer divided by class or even by regions or nations of origin during the postwar era. An influx of West African immigrants fundamentally destabilized what it meant to be British. In contrast, as chronicled in the 1887 short story by Charles Chesnutts The Goophered Grapevine, the presence of African-Americans was just as often used to affirm the whiteness and self-perceived superiority of the majority. African-Americans must use conjuring and lies to assert themselves over the whites that dominate society because of their socially marginalized status. The Phillips brothers book gets its name from the Empire Windrush, a ship that transported former West Indian soldiers to Great Britain. The soldiers were willing immigrants, who had served with distinction in the British Army and sought to better their lot in life. There was a substantial influx of West Indians after the arrival of the Windrush in 1948, and their numbers grew after the United States passed immigration controls in the 1950s. Great Britain was to limit immigration itself in the 1960s, but in the years when it was still liberalized, the numbers of nonwhites grewShow MoreRelatedAustralia Is Experiencing A True Predicament1342 Words   |  6 PagesAustralians feel that the nation does not have a clear nation identity. Poetry, Post-1914 †Literature Coursework Free Essays

With detailed reference to three poems, compare and contrast the poets’ presentation of war through their choice of language and form. World War One was one of the most influential events over Western literature. The three poems which I will analyse in this essay are â€Å"Dulce Et Decorum Est† by Wilfred Owen, â€Å"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death† by W. We will write a custom essay sample on Poetry, Post-1914 – Literature Coursework or any similar topic only for you Order Now B. Yeats and â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth† also by Wilfred Owen. Poets such as Owen decided to write very powerful poems at this period of time to show the world what was going on in the war. By these poems being written and published in various newspapers, the world would get to see what was really happening in the war, rather than seeing all the propaganda that many governments showed the public. The forms of the three poems are mainly very different. â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth† is written as a sonnet, which is generally associated with love. This association suggests that â€Å"Anthem† was written as a celebration of their lives, rather than as a poem to commemorate their lives. Another slight similarity is that â€Å"Anthem† and â€Å"Dulce† are both written using stanzas, rather than â€Å"An Irishman† which is written in free form, even though it is significantly longer than â€Å"Anthem†. The rhyme schemes of â€Å"Dulce Et Decorum Est† and â€Å"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death† are the same, following the ABAB†¦ pattern, however â€Å"Anthem For Doomed Youth† has a very different rhyme scheme, sometimes using ABAB†¦ and sometimes using AABB†¦ the times in which these rules are used are very random. â€Å"Dulce Et Decorum Est† was written by Owen to tell the world about what was really happening in the war. Most of the poem is made up of phrases describing the torment and pain that soldiers went through during this time. An example of one of these phrases is when he says â€Å"Knock-kneed, coughing like hags†, by using this simile, Owen is conveying to the audience that many soldiers were injured and suffering badly during the war. Yeats uses a similar technique to get the message of bad conditions through to the audience, he says â€Å"Those I fight I do not hate†, stating that he doesn’t even know the people that he is fighting, so cannot have hate for them, even though they could kill or injure him. He is also showing a different tone to the poem, saying that it is indifferent, calm and detached. â€Å"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death† is written in first person, giving it a personal feel, making you feel like you know the â€Å"Irish Airman† and understand his problems and sorrows. Contrary to this, both â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth† and â€Å"Dulce Et Decorum Est† are written in third person, making the reader feel like the poems are more of a story than a person account of the war, even though Owen fought in the war. There are many messages in each of the poems. One of the most easy to see hidden message occurs in â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth†, line three is the longest line throughout the whole poem and it says this: â€Å"Only the stuttering rifles’ raid battle†. This phrase can be interpreted in many different ways. One of these could be that the â€Å"stuttering rifles† are the prayers that are being said for the soldiers have been saying, however the â€Å"stuttering rifles† could mean the rifles are causing a long and painful death, and this is, in fact the reason why the line is so long. In â€Å"Dulce Et Decorum Est† the same technique is also used. This time the longest line is the second line which says â€Å"Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through the sludge†. This line is saying how the soldiers were so injured and worn out that they â€Å"cursed through the sludge† meaning it took them a long time. This is the reason why the line is so long. The longest line of â€Å"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death† does however not follow the same pattern. The first line of â€Å"Anthem† is written in the form of a rhetorical question, this question makes you think about what happened to all the people that died â€Å"like cattle† die in inhuman ways, and just being slaughtered. â€Å"Dulce† immediately starts by using a simile; â€Å"Bent double, like old beggars under sacks†, this simile is showing you the extent of the injuries suffered, it made them â€Å"bent† like old people would be, not young people who should have fit and healthy bodies. â€Å"I know that I shall meet my fate† is the opening line of â€Å"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death†, this immediate impact, by the man saying he is going to die is very dramatic; it engages the reader and creates suspense about what is going to happen. The past, present and future are all mentioned in â€Å"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death†. â€Å"I know that I shall meet my fate† is the airman saying that he knows that he will die soon, this is in the present, â€Å"The years to come, seemed waste of breath† is saying that the years to come seem a waste of time, talking about the future and â€Å"A waste of breath the years behind† is saying that the years gone by also seem like a waste of time. This use of all three tenses is giving the audience a briefing about what happened in the past, what is happening at the moment and what the airman fears will happen in the future. Both â€Å"Dulce Et Decorum Est† and â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth† are written in the present because they have a main purpose of telling the audience what is happening, rather than what happen in the past and what will happen in the future. During the early 1900’s many British people were religious, rather than today, where only a small fraction of people keep any religious observance. The fact that people kept to there religion meant that a lot of this type of imagery was put into poems during the war. â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth† has all the components in it to tell you what a funeral for one of the fallen soldiers would be like, it mentions â€Å"bells† as in bells at a church, but Owen may also be referring to the noise of the rifles, it also mentions â€Å"prayer† which could also be the hope that the soldiers had in order that they would survive and it also mentions many others including â€Å"choirs† which could be the other soldiers. Similarly to â€Å"Anthem†, â€Å"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death† also uses religious imagery; this occurs when Yeats says â€Å"my country is Kiltartan Cross†, this can be perceived in the way that â€Å"Kiltartan Cross † is his religion, because it is where he is from, and he has great passion to fight for them, in order that they win. Both â€Å"Dulce Et Decorum Est† and â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth† describe injured servicemen in great detail. This is done because the injuries were so great that some of the soldiers had, the poets felt a ‘responsibility’ of telling the public what was happening. One example of this poetic device in â€Å"Anthem for Doomed Youth† is when it says; â€Å"The pallor of girls’ brows shall be their pall; Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds† This is saying that there faces were the colour of a coffin cloth (white) and that they had wounded minds like a patient in hospital. One type of this imagery used in â€Å"Dulce† is when Owen says; â€Å"If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs† This is saying that blood was spooling out of the â€Å"corrupted† lungs, making you imagine a dead or struggling soldier on the floor with blood oozing out of him. Contrary to these two poems â€Å"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death† does not describe injured soldiers; this may be because Yeats wanted to make his poem seem different to many poems which were appearing in the media at the time. After writing this essay, I have realised that different poets use different techniques to write their poems, making them appealing to different types of audiences. However, advertising on local TV channels can be surprisingly affordable for companies. Nakamura (2015) stated that TV and radio advertisement can help a company to reach more target audience compare to any other types of advertisements. It has been found that both the selected organizations, Melbourne City Football Club and Bendigo Bank are already established in the Australian market. Both the companies have taken some initiatives to improve their TV and Radio advertisements. Incident Commanders Action Plan. Essays - Incident Management

Incident Commander's Action Plan. Student Name Instructor MOS 5301 Fire Protection Technology Columbia Southern University Whenever there is a fire incident, the incident commander is tasked with developing an effective action plan that would help save lives and property involved in the incident and to ensure that the fire fighters are also safe from incidents in the process of handling the issue. The commander requires adequate knowledge of the water-based system in coming up with an appropriate action plan. The NFPA 25 standard guides the buildings and constructions in equipping the building with safety systems and providing room for effective fire fighting in the event of a fire break out. The knowledge of water-only system will help the commander in following through with the safety measures stipulated in the system and which the constructors had followed in undertaking the building (Pfannenstiel, 2010). The action plan is developed according to the needs of the particular incident. The knowledge of the system and the standards is critical for the manager to identify the routes that the fire team may use, the safety spots and the systems available in the building they may use in the event they are trapped inside to help them secure their safety. The commander can base his strategy and tactic on this knowledge that acts as his standard point. He would use the system knowledge to analyze the fire situation and the setting of the building to determine the safe way of handling the fire incident without incurring any more casualties. The search crew is the most endangered group thus the knowledge of the water system would be very helpful in leading them in safe passages in their rescue efforts and helping them keep away from the danger zones in the building that may be potentially fatal (Pfannenstiel, 2010). If there are no weekly or monthly tests during the whole course, students do not have the opportunity to improve their study skills, and the final examination can become the real challenge for them. In his essay â€Å"More Testing, More Learning†, Patrick O’Malley discusses all these cont roversial questions and provides the solution to the problem which is based on implementing more frequent tests during the course in order to control the students’ progress in studying, stimulate their motivation, and improve their study skills. The additional examinations, frequents tests, and quizzes during the course can be discussed as the effective organizational means to improve the students’ performance and the level of knowledge with accentuating the regular work and reducing the possible procrastination and anxiety connected with the final tests. The examinations which influence the final mark of the students for their performance during the definite courses are the main reasons of the students’ worrying at the end of the academic terms. Moreover, the stressful situation of the examination and the inadequate tension during the preparation period often influence the students’ achievements negatively. In addition to that, many students prefer to pr ocrastinate and not to study regularly and efficiently during the course. O’Malley states that â€Å"if professors gave additional brief exams at frequent intervals, students would learn more, study more regularly, worry less, and perform better on midterms, finals, and other papers and projects† (O’Malley 488). In spite of the fact I am not inclined to procrastinate, it is rather difficult for me to recollect all the necessary information during the last days before the examination because of the stressful situation, and the courses with many additional tests are more useful for me.Advertising Looking for essay on education? These short examinations can be use d for developing students’ study habits and skills and for organizing the students’ academic activity. The necessity of the regular tests during the course depends on the basic principles of studying as the regular and continuous process. Thus, to achieve the best results in study, it is necessary not only to develop the learning skills and examine a lot of information but also to control the progress in learning regularly with the help of the definite tests and short examinations. From this point, final tests are not effective in organizing and controlling the students’ performance during whole course. O’Malley indicates the fact that final examinations and tests â€Å"don’t encourage frequent study, and they fail to inspire students’ best performance† (O’Malley 488). I agree with the point because the necessity of writing tests during the course helps me organize learning the material regularly because I can set definite smal l goals and achieve them while completing the tests effectively. To contribute to the students’ good performance, it is important to develop the system of lectures and discussions as well as tests for controlling the students’ short-term achievements in studying and understanding the material. Students study certain subjects and follow definite courses in order to develop their vision of this or that field, to expand their knowledge, and to improve their skills. However, to be successful in learning the definite material, students should also know how to learn it efficiently. In this case, it is important to work out the system in relation to which students could develop their learning skills. The control of the material’s understanding is the necessary part of this system. According to O’Malley, â€Å"frequent exams are key to developing good habits of study and learning† (O’Malley 489). Analyzing my academic performance, I can state that m otivation is the significant factor for me, and it helps concentrate on the task. Students are able to present the best results in their academic performance when they are highly motivated. The absence of the regular control can contribute to the development of the procrastination habits and to reducing the degree of the students’ involvement in the process of studying. Moreover, the risk of the anxiety during the preparation for the examination is directly connected with the students’ habits to cope with the regular tests during the course.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Frequent Tests as the Ways to Overcome Procrastination and Anxiety specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Students’ high academic performance and the good results in the final tests and examinations depend on many factors. Patrick O’Malley presents the arguments that the tradition of using significant examinations after the w hole course without concentrating on the short examinations, brief tests and quizzes during the course can be discussed as ineffective and reducing the students’ learning habits and skills. In spite of the fact many professors can consider such practice as time-consuming, it is one of the most effective methods to control the students’ achievements and their studying process in order to avoid procrastination and anxiety. The students’ learning process is effective not when they prepare only for the final examination at the end of the course because of the absence of certain tests, but when they have to organize the material, use their knowledge, and write tests regularly. That is why frequent tests are more useful for stimulating the students’ motivation and good results. Work Cited O’Malley, Patrick. â€Å"More Testing, More Learning†. The Art Controversy of Mapplethorpe and Serrano Essay

The Art Controversy of Mapplethorpe and Serrano - Essay Example Mapplethorpe’s art is a rare combination of classic style and revolutionary theme. He deals with his carefully chosen theme of eroticism so as to aggravate the shock value. He exploits the different nuances of sexuality from the homoerotic to the phallic. His preferences with homoeroticism come naturally from his homosexual orientation. And to some extent it would not be wrong to say that his work of art portrays his own reflections and conceptualization of the erotic from a homosexual point of view. But to restrain his content to sexuality would be grossly unfair because in his later years Mapplethorpe had an ideological shift and he concentrated more on abstract spiritual themes rather than material ones. The uniqueness of his art lay in the fact that Mapplethorpe was unapologetic in his treatment of themes. He went ahead to capture in his frame some starkly bold moments of eroticism and the incongruous that have irked many.

Property law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Property law - Essay Example Therefore, the valuer or surveyor’s only real obligation is to the truth, in that the appraisal must be accurate and not inflated. There are a number of factors that goes into this, as discussed below. Moreover, real estate agents and brokers also have a duty to the truth. This means that they, like the surveyors and valuers, must do extensive research before selling a house, and if they make a material omission or false statement of fact, they will be liable, and this liability is strict. This means that there is liability, regardless of whether the statement is innocent, negligent, reckless or intentional. Therefore, anybody in real estate has a duty to anybody who might be affected by their statements or appraisals, which means that anybody in real estate has the duty to do a thorough and diligent search before committing themselves to selling a house, in the case of real estate agents, or valuing a house, in the case of surveyors or valuers. Two Types of Liability The Prop erty Misdescriptions Act 1991 is an Act that governs many different types of ethical breaches a surveyor might encounter or commit. It states that, when a real estate professional makes a false or misleading statement during the course of a business transaction, the person who made the statement is guilty of an offence under this Act (Property Misrepresentations Act 1991 Â § 1(1)). The same goes for an employee – if an employee makes a false or misleading statement during the course of a business transaction, that employee can be guilty under the Act, whether or not the employer is involved with the breach (Property Misrepresentations Act 1991 Â § 1(2)). The misleading statement must also be material, not trivial, and this is judged by the perspective of the reasonable person (Property Misrepresentations Act 1991). Whether or not the statement is misleading is also judged from the perspective of a reasonable person (Property Misrepresentations Act 1991). Moreover, the Act i s one of strict liability, which means that any statement can be actionable, not just statements that are negligent, reckless or intentional (Property Misrepresentations Act 1991). Therefore, under the Property Misrepresentations Act, a real estate professional, any real estate professional, must be very careful with what they tell prospective buyers. Because the Act is one of strict liability, which means that a real estate professional can still be found guilty under this Act, even if that professional is not aware that the statement that he or she is making is false, that means that one of the major responsibilities that a real estate professional has is the duty to ensure that their statements are true and that there are no material omissions. This would mean that extensive research must be done during any transaction, including title searches, surveys, accurate property appraisals and the like. That said, surveyors may be at risk of negligence. According Murdoch (2005) surveyor s may be guilty of negligence when they do not use skill in preparing their reports and the homeowner relied upon the surveyor’s report (Murdoch, 2005, p. 1). Historically, however, the homeowner would not be able to recover damages from the surveyor, as there was no privity of contract between the homeowner and the surveyor. The privity of contra

Building a Power Base in a New Organization Case Study

Building a Power Base in a New Organization - Case Study Example Hence it is important realize that the first few months of transfer is critical in building a power base in order to accomplish the leadership role and changes that you want to achieve and realize your personal and professional goals (Houston, 2008). According to Paula Brynion (2004), power is one’s capability to influence others. The nursing industry must recognize that constructing a power base is a vital force in controlling one’s vocation and place in an organization. Brynion furthers states that the capacity to identify and connect the enthusiasm and prospect of nursing is imperative in building a positive perception of and using power. Hence, a list of strategies in building a power base is listed and expounded in this paper. 1. Be professional and act as a team player. Since you are a new nameless subject in the group, you must present yourself in a package that would leave a positive mark to your coworkers. Uphold an aura of professionalism and competence by goi ng to work early and well-groomed. Be conscious of how you talk with others and try to be tactful and confident especially when dealing with head nurses and doctors. Maintaining composure even under times of stress will leave them a good impression of you. It is also necessary to work harder, volunteer for extra shifts and readily help colleagues to contribute more to the community. Involve yourself in meetings, extra assignments and accept these tasks with an open mind. Eventually, perseverance and professionalism can take you greater heights and everyone will associate your name with respect and credibility (Daly, Speedy and Jackson, 2003). 2. Learn the rules. Building a power base command for socialization and determination of the key people of power in the company. Understanding the â€Å"unspoken rules† in an organization is critical in blending in with your new surroundings, will provide you with a broader vision of the organization and get a better sense of how it func tions. It is essential for any newcomer to recognize the culture and values of the institution in order to have an awareness of the do’s and don’ts in the workplace. The information achieved through these details can benefit you by gaining entrance into important networks in the system (Carter, 2007). 3. Increase expert power. Given that you have been a registered nurse for five years from a previous hospital, it is expected that proper training and experience are already at hand. However, continuous gaining of knowledge, expertise and skills are still needed to increase expert power. New challenges arise every day that can help increase not only your skill level but your maturity as well. Moreover, taking up specialty certifications and advanced studies upsurges your power base because of new knowledge gained. Open positions for higher ranks may specifically require certain capabilities so you need to seize those opportunities by gaining expert power as much as you ca n (Yoder-Wise, 2011). 4. Search for mentors and form alliances with other professionals. Associate yourself with positive role models that imitate nursing excellence and behave accordingly. Coworkers who show commitment to extensive learning and love for their jobs are more likely to emulate optimistic approach in making a difference in the nursing industry. These kinds of people can be of great influence to you since mentoring is an active process that can help build a power base.

Job Costing and Batch Costing Methods

Job Costing and Batch Costing Methods There are various types of business in the world now. Each and every business has to choose a particular method to ascertaining the costs are available in the business. Simply costing methods is a method of collecting cost. As in the diagram 1.1 costing methods are drifting apart. Specific Order Costing is the basic costing method. This method is suitable to those businesses where the work consists of separately identifiable of contracts, jobs or batches. 1.2 Definition Job Costing Method This is one of the methods that we analyze the cost of the job. If we identify the word job in here we can say that it as a small work or group of small activities in any production. This system considers job as a cost unit which contains a sole order, individual project or contract. This is an isolation of the entire time, material and costs to a sole order or job. This cause for gathering and covering on the expenses and income connect with particular projects or job. Some customers will not order the all product, but they will just order for getting required job. Hence it is essential to discover out that job orders expenditure throughout this method. Batch Costing method This is a modified type of job costing. Batch costing method is using by companies whose products are simply recognized by batches. In here batch of identifiable products are concerned as a sole job among unit price. Simply this is a method whereby recognize units produced are concerned as a sole unit and the amount of expenditure is allocated to the entire of that batch as an alternative of each unit. This used in ready-made garments, factories, industries, etc. Similarities Actually they are lot of similarities between job costing and batch costing because batch costing is a modified form of job costing. The costing method means the system they are following to count the cost in batch costing is similar to the job costing apart from a one point of difference. Because in here batch has been set in as the cost unit as a replacement of a job. Simply the both are using the equal expenditure build up system. From both methods we can ascertain costs which business needs. The both systems are dealing with holding within a contract cost by book keeping method. Both Methods are makes use of appraised expenditure data as the base for necessary order price quotations. Differences The main difference is the way how the business is operated. Think like some company is setting up costing for general supplier. For this in job costing the business is operated one job at a time thus it creates more sense rather than batch costing. Batch costing would use various goods to be sold to a number of distributors by using a producing facility. In job order costing each manufactured goods is manufactured according to job requirement, for the customer demand. But in batch costing it is a mass production. When we talking about the production requirements they also act in different ways. In job costing production requirement for each production is matchless and unique. But in batch costing every one of units has similar common features for the production requirements. And there is a differentiation about the measure of output. In job costing as it name seems it is used for a job (sole) but in batch costing transacts with a measure of identical manufactured production units. In job costing the entire expenditure calculated are concerned as the expenditure of sole unit. For batch costing, they divided the entire expenditure from the quantity of products unites have produced. In job costing it covers up all fixed and changeable expenditures for producing a batch but in job costing they include by keeping an account of direct costs and indirect costs. In job costing perform job is treated as a cost unit however under the batch costing a collection of equal units which contains in the batch can be treated as a cost unit. Job costing is using by Furniture making, printing etc but batch costing is using by garments and drug industries. In batch costing they using a divide cost sheet means separate sheets for each batch by numbering but in job costing each job is treated as a sole job work. Examples Job costing Such as hardware, ship-building, engineering industries are using this method. Example No- 01 Tom and Jerry Engineering Company has accomplished all the works in hand on 28th November 2011 which they absorbed on job work. But it was apart from job no. 112. Direct material of $ 50,000 and direct labour cost of $ 40,000 was showed in the cost sheet on 28th November 2011 individually as having being carried on job no. 112. Until 28th November 2011, the cost was carried by the business. As following it was the accounting year for the last date. It is using by the industries which manufactures products as batches. Ready-made garments, drug industries and some of the companies which are producing electronic parts of computer and etc are using this method as their costing system. Example No- 01 As to the records of Lion King ready-made garment, one customer orders 300 unites of batch. Following details are for 100 units. Calculate selling price for 300 unites. Time-Rate Method and Piece-Rate Method 2.1 Definitions Remuneration means motivating people by giving a financial reward to them gain for their work. Simply we can say it is the types of the wages plans. It is an agreement between labours and employers in an organization. Hence it is more important section in an organization. There are two categories in here: Time Rate Plan This is a simplest and of course the oldest type of wages plans. In here the wages are paid on the basis on time which a single worker corporate to complete the producing a single article. Simply we can say in time rate plan is employers are salaried for the total time they have spend at employment work. This can be calculating in man hours or man minutes or else on daily weekly or monthly. The following formula is using to calculate this method. Gross Payment = the total time worked ÃÆ'- Rate per the time (Hours/ Minutes) (Per hour/ per minute) Piece Rate Plan This is also identified as piece work, performance related pay. This is depending on the total quantity of the outputs which the employer has produced. In here the worker means employer is paid a fixed payment for every single unit of production regardless of the time. Simply we can say it pays for the result thus people say this as payment by result system. From this method business can have a better output and also they can make sure that employees are salaried for the sum of work they do. The following formula is used for this method. Straight Unit Work = Quantity of good units ÃÆ'- Rate for a single Produced Piece 2.2 Similarities The both systems are simple to understand and it is easy to calculate also. Hence we can say both systems are simplicity methods. And also the both methods are economical. Both methods are preferred and accepted by deal unions. Both ways workers are having a financial statement thus worker is fulfilled. After having the financial reward they automatically become motivated by both systems. 2.3 Differences First of all we can say both having different meanings. As I mentioned earlier time rate is a system based on time which workers work and piece rate is a method base on the products which workers create. In piece rate system it pays the worker following to the quantity of good products which they have produce regardless of time. But in time rate it pays the workers following for the time that they have spent to product the outputs. Time rate plan provide an accentuation on huge amount of outputs nevertheless piece rate plan accentuation on quality of output. Through piece rate system it discrimination the employer and pays extra gross wage to skilled workers. But in time rate it pays both skilled and unskilled workers same wages. Piece rate system need a strike supervisor to check the quality of the out puts but time rate system does not need it. Hence for piece rate plan business need to cost a extra amount for maintenance. When we talking about the ascertainment of labour cost, in piece rate plan it supports o fix per piece labour cost in advance but time rate plan does not support for this.

Narrative vs. Montage Essay -- essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Each film has a distinct purpose associated with it. Whether this purpose is as simple as teaching children a valuable lesson or as complex as criticizing a society’s barriers, there are explicit goals which must be discerningly conveyed. There are specific elements to filmmaking which are designed to contribute to the goals set forth when making a film. Such elements include what would be considered â€Å"aesthetics of astonishment,† or striking images, editing conflict and other techniques associated with montage filmmaking. Each of these techniques imprint a thought or logic on a film – a kind of â€Å"watermark† – that pushes the film itself towards the accomplishment of the original goals. Regardless of the need for the completion of these â€Å"higher goals†, a director’s ability to keep a viewer’s undivided attention is crucial to the success of a film. Each viewer must remain fascinated from start to finish by the plot a nd characters, or he will lose interest in the film. So, when a film relies on a strong narrative base to keep its audience captivated, there is little room for variation from the elements which depict the story best. Striking montage images or techniques, if not carefully placed, can have a tendency to take the viewer’s eye from the progression of the narrative and turn their thought to something else.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Quite often, montage aspects of a film are deliberately placed to invoke specific thoughts or feelings. Such techniques can be employed to even go so far as to provide an alternate connotation to an event than what the average viewer would normally formulate. Parallelism is a method designed to do just that. This technique allows directors to have his audience associate a single action or event with a secondary action or event. The Strike parallels the slaughter of a cow and the execution of factory workers to generate a deeper emotion than one would normally associate with murder. The audience does not view the execution as merely mass murder, but instead they compare the soldiers to a butcher and connect the murder itself to something heartless and revolting – a slaughter. The Strike seems to tastefully use this method to strengthen the purpose of the film itself: a criticism of murder and execution. There is, however a fine line between what is tasteful and what is not. If this techniqu... ...en were sickened by the excessive visual conflict. Needless to say, these flashes took a significant amount of attention away from the narrative itself, and one can safely assume that such an event would tend to make a film rather unpopular.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  If the aesthetics of astonishment are not employed whatsoever, the film loses its purpose and becomes an empty recital of the actions of its characters. This deems the striking montage elements necessary. If these elements are overdone, then the audience can and will lose sight of the narrative element. Should this cause the audience to lose interest in the film altogether, then the film is a failure and the director loses credibility. The most important aspect of creating a film is finding a healthy medium between completing the objective of the film and presenting the narrative. Directors are responsible for depicting the necessary montage elements in a film while avoiding creating what Gunning describes as â€Å"an excess of mimesis† (FTC). One could argue that this very conflict is what distinguishes films that find this medium as â€Å"great films.† Books used to support this paper: Film Theory and Criticism Film Art

Student Stress

Today's students are faced with many challenges, many additional pressures, and numerous stresses. High school creates a variety of difficulties and challenges for teens but on average their main stresses are schoolwork, personal problems and time consuming Jobs. Teens find themselves under far too much pressure. Being a teenager Is typically thought of as a fun and free time In life, but It's turning Into a stressful period in a person's life. Most teens set a goal of doing well in school to achieve their dream job or Just better themselves. Many classes feel short and quick, teachers buzz through topics and units faster than most can comprehend. Still, the teachers and parents expect you to be able to achieve high marks on tests and assignments. The work load is enormous. Every class you are expected to do an hour or two of homework every night and finding the time is close to impossible. Most programs at university expect a high 80 percent average. For some it comes easy, others, a great challenge. Expectations from universities and parents can add more stress on to your already trustful school life.I personally feel as If school has gotten a lot harder since our parents attended. Since they had a grade 13, an extra year to prepare and learn. This means that everything taught within five years Is now squeezed Into four. Learning at a quicker pace is a lot more difficult than having an extra year. High school impacts a student's life for the rest of their educational path. Along with many hours at school, most students have a part time Job to attend right after school. Work conflicts with school and the work load.I personally have a art time Job and after working 5-6 hours after school, homework is the last thing on my mind. Many teens get jobs to gain independence from their parents and stand on their own financially. However there is also the reality of funding post-secondary education. University tuitions are expensive and have been rising throughout the ye ars. Some the dream of university is all based around grades but the finances too. Saving up and working hard at school Is extremely stressful and hard to find a balance between school, work and a social life.Students need time to relax and moieties that's hard to find. I get extremely stressed whenever I have work and even the smallest amount of homework, so I can only imagine how it is for grade twelve working all the time with huge amounts of homework. Working as a teenager is stressful and adding homework on top of that can be unbelievable. Personal problems are a reality for almost everyone. But for teenagers it's harder to handle due to social media, bullying and parents. Social media has been a huge toll on many of my friends. The drama that surrounds social media can be tolling on a student's incineration. Privacy is a thing of a past with almost every personal problem now being slew on social media sights. This has happened to everyone at some point in high school, either be ing bullied on or off social media. Even If it's not In school, family stresses can dramatically Impact your day or your attentiveness In and out of school. High school is stressful from the start, but the stress accumulates as the years go important that students be able to recognize this stress and deal with it before it becomes overwhelming.

How Necessary was Britains policy of Appeasement Towa essays

How Necessary was Britain's policy of Appeasement Towa essays How necessary was Britains policy of appeasement towards Germany in the 1930s? Appeasement was the honourable policy of recognising that a country has grievances, which should be addressed so that negotiations can be brought around to avoid war. Britain really wanted to avoid war after the damage and devastation caused to them during World War One. The first reason why Britain appeased Germany was that she felt that the treaty of Versailles, which was a diktat put on Germany, was too harsh. The treaty of Versailles said that all Germanys colonies were to be take of her and given to the allies to administer. Their army was reduced to 100,000 men who would serve twelve years and they were not allowed any tanks, air force, and submarines and were only allowed a coastal fleet of ships. They were ordered to demilitarise the Rhineland, give back the Polish Corridor and were forbidden to unite with Austria. Germany also had to pay reparations to the allies. This treaty also lost Britain some trade as a result of it as Germany was so weak that she could not afford to trade with Britain. After the damage and the devastation caused by World War One Britain felt she was unprepared to fight against Germany so she felt that it would be better to appease Germany at least until she had built up her military forces. Britain felt she was economically weak and could not afford to do this and go to war but the problem she had was not that she didnt have the money for it she didnt want to spend the money she did have on defences. If Britain did end up going to war they did not have any reliable allies. Frances was not reliable to help because she was weak and also her government kept changing from left wing to right wing and didnt know what she was doing. This was proving the case when they were at war in June 1940 they collapsed within six weeks. The USA was not a reliable allay because she did no...

Henry Clay essays

Henry Clay essays Discuss Henry Clay as the symbol of the antebellum era. Give four examples where his success or failure reflected a broader social trend. Henry Clay, born a poor, orphaned boy from the Virginia slashes, became one of the most popular and influential political leaders in American History and the symbol of the Antebellum era. The Antebellum era was the time period preceding the Civil War between the North and the South. This era was caught between the glory of the Revolutionary and Founding period and the spectacular drama of the Civil War - the bloody and destructive birth and rebirth of the nation. A time filled with tumultuous political action, but lack of blood and gun powder - political action from fascinating and extremely influential characters such as Andrew Jackson, Jon Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, John Calhoun, etc. It was the task of this generation and its political leaders to build on the legacy left by the Founding Fathers and more importantly preserve the Constitution and the Union; and to reinforce and embellish liberty and self-government. At the center of these tasks and drama stood Henry Clay, the true symbol of this time. His unmeasurable devotion to the preservation of the Union, his record on slavery, and his rivalry with Andrew Jackson are three prime examples of how Clay as a political figure embodied the era of his time, its people, their popular views, and the trends. The key aspects of his life mentioned above are in direct relation to three of the most important aspects of the era, the Union and its state of togetherness, Abolitionism, and the Second American Political Party system. Henry Clay will never be questioned on his devotion to preserving the Union. He would sacrifice his most strongly held points of view when the integrity of the Union he so loved and so tried to keep together were threatened. The Union he put above all else. He was often credited as the man who kept the Union to...

Amilcar cabral Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Amilcar cabral - Assignment Example Depending with the type of colonialism, that is, settler or exploitation colonialism, the ant-colonialism movements/groups will employ different techniques in their bid to regain back their freedom and/or autonomy of rule (Lovejoy, 2012); which may take violent and/or non-violent measures. The non-violent techniques and strategies involve diplomacy and negotiations but they are mainly inapplicable simply because the motivation for colonization is long term missioned based on either political, religious and economic interest; and the breakdown of these measures leads to suppression by police or armed forces necessitating the colonies to form revolts to fight for independence. Background Majority of the African countries have had a history of either settlers or exploitation colonization with the latter taking precedence due to minerals and favorable weather and climatic conditions that favored settler’s agricultural interest. ... for Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Kenya and Swaziland respectively in a bid to fight for their independence (Bienen, 1977). In this paper we shall look into details the activities of Amilcar Cabral and his undying motivation to liberate people of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde as we analyze the political and social journey during colonial and postcolonial era. Amilcar Cabral was a Guinea Bissau national born on September 12, 1924 and assassinated on January 20, 1973, 8 months afore the unilateral affirmation of liberation for Guinea Bissau. He is viewed as a nationalist thinker and a political leader who based his social-economic and political views on materialist interpretation of historical development and dialectical view of social transformation through analysis of class-relations and conflicts in the society, commonly referred to as Marxism (Callinicos, 2011). Though he was not a Marxist, he drew much of his inspiration and motivation from education and profess ionalism he had gained as an agronomist and a writer from Instituto Superior De Agronomia University in Lisbon, Portugal. While a student in Lisbon, he founded a student movements dedicated to opposing dictatorship rule by Portuguese with an aim of promoting the cause of liberation of Portuguese colonies in Africa, a move that envisioned his political career and a perception as the Africa’s foremost ant-colonial leader. He led African Party for Independence of Guinea Bissau People and Cape Verde [PAIGC], a guerilla movement he had founded in Guinea Bissau together with MPLA for Angola in 1956, against the Portuguese rule and later evolved as one of the most successful wars of independence in African history. With the vast knowledge of Portuguese traditions he had gotten

Karl Donitz Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Karl Donitz - Essay Example This strategy required the conversion of German fleet to U-boats. Despite opposition from the other senior naval officers, Donitz went ahead to train his crew on his innovation. When the war begun, the German Navy was under the leadership of Donitz. This navy commander was very instrumental in the war because he mobilized his troop to conquer the British merchant ships during the War. At this time, the Germany navy was not prepared for war since it was anticipating that the war would begin in 1945. This unpreparedness resulted from the focus on German Navy's extensive "Z Plan" which was due for completion in 1945. When the war broke out, there was no choice for Germany but the use submarine warfare because it was the only naval option that was already prepared 1. Thesis statement Karl Donitz, a German Naval Commander served as a vital object in persuading the military organization to adopt an innovation based on the submarine in order to conquer the colonial rule during the inter-war period and the World War II. By November 1937, Donitz had a realistic vision of German’s success against its enemies. By this time, he was convinced that it was practical to launch a good campaign against merchant shipping. From this point on, Donitz begun to push for the conversion of the German fleet to U-boats to the greatest and most significant extend possible2. He also revived the idea of creating wolf-packs out of the entire German fleet. His influence was effective owing to his position in the navy. Since January 1938, he served as Commodore and Commander of Submarines. Many chief army commanders including Erich Raeder, the naval leader strongly opposed Donitz. There was also competition from people like Herman Goring who received much attention during this time. Despite the existing controversy with Raeder, Donitz went ahead and conducted intense training on his crews regarding the new tactics. His opposers had put their hope in German Navy's extensive "Z Plan,† a plan that was scheduled to be completed in 1945. As noted earlier, they were anticipating that the World War II would start in 1945. However, the war broke out in 1939 and at this time, the German surface fleet was in a state of marked inferiority. Because of this, the only naval option available for Germany was submarine warfare. Donitz and His Military tactics Background in the military Donitz joined the Imperial German Navy in 1910 and in April the same year, he became a sea-cadet. In April 1911 Donitz begun serving as a midshipman before becoming an officer working aboard the cruiser SMS Breslau in 1912. In September 1913, he was commissioned as an Acting Sub-Lieutenant. When the Breslau was sold to Ottoman navy in 1914, Donitz and his colleagues began operating out of Constantinople under Whilhem Souchon. War and peace - Essay Example The Zionist argument is that they appeared in Palestine in the late 19th century with the intention of reclaiming their ancestral land. Jews purchased land and started putting up the Jewish community. Palestinian Arabs with violent opposition tried to force the Jewish out of the land, but the Zionist reacted with force to defend themselves. This same case exists up to date. The Zionist movement, from the start, desired to completely dispossess the indigenous Arab inhabitants so that Israel could be completely a Jewish state (Bennis 58). The land purchased by the Jewish Fund was in custody of the Jewish and could not be sold or leased to Arabs. The Arab population, as it became aware of the Zionists’ desires and intentions, it opposed further immigrations of the Jewish. The Arab population also opposed further sale of land to the Zionists. The sale of land to the Zionists exerted an immense danger to the existence of Arab community in Palestine. Because of the opposition, the w hole project of Zionist could not be realized without the backing of the British military. The Zionists did not mind about the real inhabitants of the land they believed in colonialist view that the rights of the original inhabitants did not matter. All that the Zionist wanted was total or partial entitlement to the land. On the other hand, the Arab’s opposition to the Zionists was not based on anti-Semitism, but on a reasonable fear of dispossession of their populace. Because of these two oppositions, the conflict continues. Palestine became an Arab and Islamic state by the end of the seventh century. Its boundaries and characteristics became known almost immediately. The occupants of the land at the time believed that they lived in a land known as Palestine. However, after the establishment of Israel in 1948, everything changed. The land, which the inhabitants of Palestine referred to as Palestine, part of it, was now Israel. The Palestine and the Israelis oppose each other regarding the land. Each group seeks to fight for the land, which they believe is theirs. This opposition increases daily and deepens as the two groups engage in the fight and kill one another’s group. The fight could have been halted a long time ago if there existed no opposition to the land. For a very long time, the ancient Arabs who have been existing on the land were the majority as the Zionist came to purchase land and establish their community. In this case, when the Arabs discovered the intentions of the Zionists of forcing out of the Arab community, the Arabs gained opposition to the move since they wanted to retain their ancestral land and at the same time, the Arabs were the majority. There was no way; the Arabs could have allowed a minor community to force them out of their inherited soil. On the other hand, the Zionist could not give up gaining ownership of the land for their benefit. As the two sides oppose each other, the conflict continues to exist between th e two communities (Tessler 73). According to the founder of Zionism, the aim of the Zionist was to split the penniless population, who were the Arabs, across the border through procuring employment in transit countries. The process of expropriating and removing of the poor was to be carried out circumspectly and discreetly. However, at

Legal Brief Essay Example for Free

Legal Brief Essay Case name, citation, and court: Ashley County, Arkansas v. Pfizer, Inc, 552 F.3d 659 (8th Cir. 2009) Summary of Key Facts: An ingredient widely used in Pfizer’s products is a necessary ingredient in the manufacturing of methamphetamine in small toxic labs which are responsible for dangerous explosions, burns, and toxic fumes. Arkansas has one of the largest numbers of small toxic labs in the US and is burdened with high costs of fighting the meth epidemic and is seeking to recoup some of the funds that the counties of Arkansas have spent. The Issue: Is Pfizer ethically responsible for assisting in the funding of fighting the meth epidemic? The Holding: Since Pfizer is a major manufacturer of products containing necessary ingredients used in illegal meth labs and the counties of Arkansas has been so heavily financially burdened by these labs, the damages are obvious. The counties have suffered financial loss from battling a drug that could not be made without the ingredients in Pfizer’s products. Because of these damages and Pfizer’s role in the supply of ingredients to drug labs, it is the responsibility of Pfizer to either, repay the counties and finance the future costs of fighting the meth epidemic or find alternative ingredients to use in their products that cannot be used in the manufacture of meth. Summary of Your Reasoning: It is the corporate responsibility of Pfizer to assist in funding the counties’ operations battling meth. Under a corporate citizenship view, Pfizer is responsible for contributing to the solution of the social problem that their products create. Meth is an epidemic rapidly sweeping the nation and it is the responsibility of anyone, or company, with any tie to the drug at all, to contribute to the solution, the same amount that they contribute to the problem.

Besides his military abilities, what made Alexander successful? What were the most important consequences of his conquests? :: essays research papers

Alexander was successful because of his willingness and ambition to be the best that he could be as a leader. In the beginning of his success, him and his army were deprived of money so he sought quick and decisive battles to gain money and supplies from the conquered territory. Because of Alexander’s ambition to be on the top, he thought of countless ways to be victories in battle, Alexander â€Å"won a smashing victory in characteristic style: He led a cavalry charge across the river into the teeth of the enemy on the opposite bank, almost losing his life in the process and winning the devotion of his soldiers. The coast of Asia Minor now open, Alexander captured the coastal cities, denying them to the Persian fleet (Craig, 105).†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Another reason what Alexander was so successful was because of his greediness. Craig states that while Alexander was in Tyre, Darius offered him his daughter and his entire empire west of the Euphrates River in exchange for an alliance and an end to the invasion but Alexander wanted the whole empire. So Alexander’s greediness motivated him to create more battles.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Alexander seemed to be a very curious type of person. Alexander was filled with plans for the future, â€Å"for the consolidation and organization of his empire; for geographic exploration; for new cites and roads, and harbors; perhaps even for further conquests in the west (Craig, 107).† As history has shown it, Alexander was one of the greatest generals the world has seen, â€Å"he never lost a battle or failed in a siege, and with a modest army, he conquered a vast empire. He had rare organizational talents, and his plans for creating a multinational empire was the only intelligent way to consolidate his conquests (Craig, 107).† Also, Alexander established many new cities, which these cites promoted commerce and prosperity and introduced Hellenistic civilizations into new areas, as stated in Craig.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Alexander’s most important consequences of his conquests was when he came to Persepolis, the Persian capitol, which held splendid palaces and the royal treasury, â€Å"this bonanza ended his financial troubles and put a vast sum of money into circulation, with economic consequences that lasted for centuries (Craig, 107).† Also, as part of his grand scheme of amalgamation and conquest, â€Å"he married the Bactrian princess Roxane and enrolled thirty thousand young Bactrians to be trained for his army (Craig, 107).

Balance Sheets for the four quarters Essay

To evaluate how I utilized both budgets and pro-formas to ensure the adequacy of funds for providing production capacity that was needed to achieve the businesses goals. I want to first start with the definition of both pro-forma and budget; A budget is a basic idea that covers more than a few areas, all in all it’s a financial plan that is made to control costs for operations and results. It can be expressed in a multitude of numerical terms, it also can cover a certain period of time, short, intermediate and long term goals. A pro-forma is also a financial statement but it is prepared based upon assumptions of specific events and transactions that will hopefully occur in the Future, so basically a projected estimate using historical data to form a hypothesis of A financial outcome. The importance of both the pro-forma and budget were huge. Knowing going into the simulation how much seed money was going to be issued and how much additional money was coming in future investments, gave me an idea of how aggressive or conservative I could be. I was able to to set with an initial idea of how much I could spend for each factor needed moving forward. I was able to understand how much to market, how much to hire and how much I could afford for each of these tasks, as well as how much was coming into pay for future marketing and hires. Without advertising there are no customers, without a good sales and service staff there are no sales, or an ability to take care of the customer. In the opening quarter of the company I had a 2 million dollar start-up fund. My upfront expenses were approximately $530,000. I also chose to invest in a 3 month CD about $880,000, I made sure in my first endeavor to keep money available and not to over indulge. I took similar approaches going into each additional quarter; thereafter I wouldreview what was spent and estimate what was coming in and at that point I would hire more employees, adjust and raise benefits and increase marketing. My sales force and marketing expenses doubled from quarter two to quarter three and rose another 49 percent from quarter three to quarter four. These two factors in my opinion are the biggest of a profitable company, as sales and marketing grow and increase your company will thrive. At the end of each quarter I would review the results in these areas and make assessments on how much additional advertising I needed based upon sales numbers of the individual computers Mercedes and the Traveler. Based upon production and the competition I would review to see if I was going to increase the sales force and the compensation plan. The overall outcome of both areas had my company in NWL as the top employers at 83 out of a maximum 84 Score; also in regards to marketing effectiveness in NWL my company had a 92 out of a 97 maximum Score that’s how I used the budget and pro-forma to help NWL achieve its goals. B.2. To evaluate how I employed Just In Time or JIT and Lean Operations to improve operating efficiency in my manufacturing facility, again as part of moving forward I want to define these two strategies before I explain how I use them. A) Just In Time or JIT is a production strategies to improve a business return on investment ROI by reducing in-process inventory as well as the associated carrying cost. This is done by only receiving goods as they are needed in the overall process, this helps cut overall inventory costs. B) Lean Operations simply supplies a customer with exactly what the customer needs when and only when the customer wants it without waste with this constant improvement, the emphasis and focus is on understanding the customer. Both JIT and Lean Operations can help with the overall increase of return on investment or ROI. In regards to how my simulation for NWL worked with these strategies, I would say in NWL ran overly Lean to a fault. I ran my operation capacity at 65 and my fixed capacity at 75 which was the second lowest of my competitors on both accounts. This was a huge negative for my company since it cost me over 2100 in lost sales. This would have increased my sales by approximately 33 percent which would have lowered the overall production costs and increase profits. I finished number 2 in sales with thehighest average price of computer. With a 33 percent increase in sales had I run a better production operation I would have had a lager profitability for a already profitable simulation. I did not key into the right places when I reviewed the early production numbers which cost me when it came to changing Operating and Fixed Capacities. I was overly cautious and my end result was indicative of this and caused big loses for NWL. B.3. Work Cells vs Traditional Straight Line Production. A Work Cell is defined to be a arrangement of machines and personnel that focuses on making a single product or family related products. Traditional Straight Line Production Is the standard assembly line style of manufacturing. Work may start in one department until that phase is complete. Then the product moves onto the next department for the next phase and the next and so on. The major difference between the two is efficiency and cost differentials. In a work cell method there are a multitude of benefits, from a reduction in work area needed, speed of production completion and number of associates needed just to name a few. All of which are in line with the thought process of JIT and Lean Operations which in turn increases ROI (return on investment). Five distinct advantages in the work cell vs the assembly line (1)Tasks are grouped, therefore inspections can be immediate. (2)Fewer workers are needed because of cross training. (3)The workers can access more of the work area. (4)Work areas are more efficiently balanced. (5)Enhanced communication based upon the shape of the work cell. These advantages can help lead to fewer employees reaching higher production numbers. Which in the simulation could have led to smaller start-up companies making more cost efficient production goals happen along with how well a micro computer company could make a work cell arrangement payoff positively. B.4. Evaluation of decisions involving inventory management in the Marketplace Simulation Inventory is defined as raw materials, work-in-progress goods and completely finished goods that are considered to be the portion of the businesses assets that are ready or will be ready for sale. Inventory represents one of the most important assets that most companies possess, because the turnover of inventory represents one of the primary sources of revenue generation and subsequent earnings for the company. In the marketplace simulation NWL was not very successful at inventory management in the attempt to run Just-in-Time (JIT) and Lean Operations, I ended up with sold out product and a enormous loss in sales. The lost sales totaled 50 percent of the total sales, which meant there could have been an additional 33 percent positive sales increase if the inventory was managed properly. These were losses of 1000 Travelers units and 1103 Mercedes units, those totals losses of $3,312,730 in gross profit. That was based upon the final sales and not taking into account any production savings by the increased sales volume. That could have increased gross profit by a minimum of 47 percent, if I had it to do over again paying more attention to the inventories would have been a possible windfall. B.5. A continuous improvement program that could have been used to improve and achieve quality assurance goals could have been either Employee Empowerment or Bench-marking. Employee Empowerment involves employees in every step of the production process. Employee’s are on the front lines and know what is going on in every aspect and on all fronts. If employees find problems they can fix them or help fix them. Whom better in handling an issue then the ones most familiar with the process, if a shortcoming is found an experienced a periodic quality circle can address it. It’s been proven that most quality issues are either material or the process, it’s not usually the employee’s performance. If a Bench-marking program were to be implemented, the first step would be to established what the benchmark would be. Examples of which are; Percentage of Defects, Cost per unit processing time, Lost sales due to Out-of-Stocks and Customer Satisfaction Rates. If these type of factors were used in my situation, I would have used either Lost sales due to Out-of-Stocks or Customer Satisfaction Rates. mainly because I would have found out possibly a better way of keeping product in stock which could have reduced lost sales as well as a negative customer satisfaction due to no product. The benchmark team can find out what and how benchmark partners were doing to achieve their sales goals by tracking and keeping product stock, whereas to assure customer satisfaction. Then we could analyze the data from the partners and take the appropriate steps to move beyond and keep the process continually improving. C. Free Essays on Hemingway And A Clean Well LIghted Place

Hemingway and his Infinite Sadness â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† embodies all aspects of Hemingway’s melancholic writing style. Several things that make up the story including the characters, the setting, and Hemingway’s own beliefs help to define the importance of Ernest Hemingway’s â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place†, in today’s literature. Hemingway’s melancholy in â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† is often likened to that of darkness in well-lit world. Ernest Hemingway’s main characters in â€Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Place† include the deaf, old man and the two restaurant waiters. When carefully reading the story, the reader is aware of the old man’s natural disablility of deafness. In comparison to Hemingway’s story’s inate darkness, writer, Elizabeth Sterling finds that â€Å"Even his ears bring him a sort of darkness as they hold out the sounds of the world.† (Wall) The old man’s solitude is defined by nature and the only thing that can fully cure is illness is the permanent death although the old man tries incesently to do drown himself in whiskey. The two young waiters watch as the old man apparently runs his course night after night. All three share the disease of insomnia, another depiction of darkness in Hemingway’s writing. One waiter bears the idea of a normal lifestyle while the other sympathizes with the old man’s depressive nightlife. Another place, we can see Hemingway’s melancholic state is in his choice of setting. He writes of a small bar in what appears to be Spain by the currency but could just as easily have taken place elsewhere on a lone summer night. His setting gives us the impression that there are other such towns and communities where old men linger until they find a faster way to death. Women Artists essays

Women Artists essays It is ridiculous that in times such as these, women are not being recognized for their artwork. In the movie, Dennis Reid highlighted the fact that only 8% of the artwork in museums is that of women. It is possible that the old ways of male superiority have not completely died in the art world, but it is time that they do. It is obvious that women are able to create art that is equally worthy of the attention received by the other gender. It is surprising to me that there exists only one museum in the world that is entirely devoted to the work of women artists. The Museum of Woman Art should in fact be one of many of its kind. Throughout the film, we viewed several incredibly talented women such as, Emily Carr, Mary Pratt, Joyce Weiland, and Doris McArthy, who deserve to have their work placed in highly regarded museums. I was shocked by the story Doris McArthy told of her troubles receiving a membership into The Ontario Society of Artists. Even though she had had her work in the groups exhibition for 3 years in a row, she was still denied membership due to the fact that she was young. Doris believes the only reason she was denied the honor was because she was a women. Many of the women depicted in the film tell similar stories of their hardships of being accepted into the art world. It was disappointing to not see the conclusion of the film during class. I am interested to learn if the art world is now accepting women more than in years past. I believe and hope that this is true. On a recent trip to BMoCA, I was surprised and happy to see that the number of woman artists in their show The Living End outweighted the number of men. Perhaps now that The Dinner Party has a home, women artists will be more frequently invited into collectors homes as well as public museums. ...
