Pulwama attack Essays - Articles, Religion, Agnosticism, Freethought

Pulwama assault Essays - Articles, Religion, Agnosticism, Freethought We, Indians, are living up in the setting of approaching dark cloud in the post imperialism mental scene with tones of political, social, strict, and to my psyche even philosophical absurdities being made light of in the field of individual and aggregate musings. The Pulwama assault is a caring occasional peak in the endless politico-military content happened in Indian political stage. The most despicable of the things coming out of such ejections are the blows those cause upon the precious ones of the individuals slaughtered - military and non military personnel. It ought to be well to recall that those kicked the bucket, regular citizen just as military, as a general rule, have a place with poor families. Money related pay is probably going to be of extraordinary assistance for the dispossessed families, yet nothing brings back the dead dad, sibling, child, companion, darling, and so on by and large. The loss of properties and loss of armed force assurance and discretionary focuses from such occurrences put on a show of being auxiliary level drop out, and are a lot of redeemable with remedial activities. Any assault on security powers in war passage and semi war charge circumstances is a success win circumstance for the legislature of the nation, all the more effectively the gathering developing the administration. Right off the bat, the fault for such horrifying act, with one and all descriptive words connected, could be effectively and strategically located on the shoulder of the aggressors of the adversary nation and an apparent foe network, and the administration tidies up its hands. Besides, similarly urgently, such assaults radiate colossal potential open doors for the decision party - all the more so when the gathering is purified through water upon majoritarianism and disdain based post-patriotism - as rich profit could be procured from such happenings, and how much reach relies on how well or how seriously the political drums are pounded by the follower media. The apparent adversary network, as is seen post-Pulwama, being assaulted in arranged moves to score some pats on the head in duels against un-equipped, scared, and cornered rivals. Generally a few offspring of Mother India are assaulting some other offspring of a similar mother, with the call of acclaim for mother India - Bande Mataram and Bharat Maata ki Jay in their jumps!! Some parasitic government officials are offering calls to blacklist Kashmris!! Where is energy and where is patriotism in the chain of occasions? Take a gander at AFSPA; the military is without given hands to manage one portion of residents of the nation - slice to a military official undermining moms of Kashmiris for the apparent wrongdoings executed by their kids. Be that as it may, with regards to show great exercises to Pak armed force and ISIS, the administration comes out with rundown of political and different imperatives. Along these lines the military is given open hand to rebuff Indian residents and a similar armed force's options are being limited while rebuffing adversaries of the nation. Any degree of human sense doesn't think about tigers, lions, deers, and other wild creatures as more helpful to people than dairy animals are. In any case, shockingly laws deny their killings, yet not of dairy animals! An enlightened individual appears to be ridiculous to be found in a line before a meat shop with executed and skin-ripped off goats hanged topsy turvy with blood spread upon picked portions of their dead bodies checking 21st century meat shop showcasing technique! A similar individual, whom we found in the line, remarks against murdering of some homeless pooches by certain neurotics! Where is creature government assistance? Where does it exist in genuine sense? Not in the records of civil servants obviously. Why such separation between creatures with regards to shielding privileges of creatures from being executed? On what premise the general public concludes that life of a crocodile is a higher priority than life of a bovine or so far as that is concerned a goat? Secularism, basically, implies non-adherence to any strict announcement. This is an air pocket of high-esteem contemplations thus blasts incidentally. Secularism can just exist where religion isn't known about, and surely India doesn't fall in that classification. Each strict individual thinks his/her religion is the best, and that is very objective to think as well, else for what reason should one hold fast to and take an interest specifically strict practices. Religion is classified with people groups' character. So one can

Cmu Essay Essays - Association Of American Universities,

Cmu Essay A University ought to be a position of enjoyment, of freedom, and of learning, commented Benjamin Disraeli, an English writer, as though he had Carnegie Mellon at the top of the priority list as he put his considerations recorded as a hard copy. How could the Institute of Technology assist me with accomplishing scholarly autonomy and help me in seeking after an existence of thoughts? Being perhaps the best foundation on the planet, Carnegie Institute of Technology would permit me to satisfy my stickler goals; I would have the option to contend with the best and the most brilliant. Also, the non-scholarly life inside a powerful grounds with a solid feeling of network would improve the difficult courses that the college brings to the table. It isn't easy to locate an unmistakable organization with mind boggling assets just as close to home consideration. With a little workforce to-understudy proportion in all classes, I could genuinely have huge communication with the educators while at the same time holding the information I'd obtain. The hands-on involvement in forward-thinking gear would resemble a fantasy work out as expected as I'd include myself with omnipresent, powerful innovation which is underestimated by the normal individual. Exploiting the expansive range of undergrad programs, I would improve my capacity to think quantitatively, tackle entangled issues, and apply my insight to this present reality. There will be there sorts of understudies: one who has the mind for math and sciences; one who can ponder bits of writing and chronicled reports; lastly, one who sees all. I fall into the principal type. Along these lines, I have consistently been keen on the field of building, for it typifies my preferred subjects. As my material science teacher discusses electromagnetic and electric fields between all protons and races, my psyche pillars with delight, for the new data is of such interest to it. As my math instructor hysterically composes the conditions of integrals on the board, I write down the notes with an away from of what the signs rely on and the rationale behind them. At that point at home, I joyfully turn on my PC and consider the virtuoso of computerized reasoning. It is extremely unlikely I am going to leave these dearest fields of study behind?therefore, Electrical and Computer Engineering would be ideal for me. Building is a significant that is required to keep encountering development, particularly solid in territories underscoring innovation. Our general public is turning out to be all the more innovatively determined step by step, and is consistently keeping watch for development and investigation into the logical front and expanding effectiveness. By picking building as a calling, I am ready to add to the prosperity of the general public just as thoroughly testing my scholarly capacities. Albeit both dissatisfaction and celebration will follow as I attempt to discover innovative answers for troublesome issues, my capability in accomplishing the undertaking would leave me fulfilled throughout everyday life. Carnegie Mellon would assist me with building up a feeling of how to deal with myself scholastically, socially, and by and by. My major in Electrical and Computer Engineering would permit me to plunge into a sea brimming with circumstances and undertakings. Bursting at the seams with new thoughts standing by to be found, Carnegie Mellon will set me up forever itself, helping in shaking my feeling of the world by permitting me to pick up the information important to accomplish my objectives as I scan for progress and satisfaction. The Confidentiality vs. Duty to Warn Conundrum free essay sample

The Confidentiality versus Obligation to Warn Conundrum This report will look at the moral problem of patient classification versus a doctor’s obligation to caution a patient of a potential wellbeing hazard (see Appendix one for situation). Fundamentally, this report will contend that quiet privacy can't be overruled, as there isn't sufficient lawful or moral thinking to do as such and in that capacity, Jane’s specialist ought not advise her kids regarding their latent capacity transformed quality. A quality can be characterized as ‘A grouping of DNA that conveys the data required to make an atom, typically a protein’ (Yourgenome. organization: 2010). Deoxyribonucleic corrosive, or DNA, is comprised of qualities and is contained in the core of cells in the human body and its motivation, basically, is to educate the body on how and when different proteins ought to be developed (Geneticshomereference. gov: 2011). These directions are built, and in this way contrast from life form to living being, by the matching and resulting arrangement of four bases; adenine thymine, guanine and cytosine. This arrangement is known as a twofold helix (See Appendix 2 for picture). Proteins, which are comprised of amino acids, are a fundamental piece of every single living life form and are important for development and muscle improvement (Google Dictionary: 2010). In people, when a male sperm cell and a female egg cell consolidate to create a zygote, explicit qualities from the two guardians are joined. The qualities that are chosen for this new kid depend on their predominant or passive characteristics. Hereditary transformation is characterized by Wordnetweb. princeton (2010) as being ‘Any change in the acquired nucleic corrosive succession of the genotype of an organism’. This transformation can happen for an assortment of reasons; introduction to radiation, ecological variables (counting ultra-violet light) or hereditary development blunders. Male sperm cells contain either a XY or XX design on their chromosome; a XY design eventuates in the production of a male, while a XX design eventuates in a female. Females just get X chromosomes and accordingly, they generally contribute X chromosomes to a youngster, while a male can contribute either a X or a Y chromosome to the kid, as he got both. In this situation, Jane got a changed BRCA1 quality from her dad, just as a typical BRCA1 quality from her mom. Therefore, Jane had two youngsters; a kid and a young lady, with a spouse who isn't a bearer of the change. Jane’s children’s example of genealogical legacy corresponding to the BRCA1 quality is shown in the table beneath: (Blue squares speak to egg cells contributed by Jane, while red squares speak to sperm cells contributed by Jane’s spouse. | N (speaking to a typical BRCA1 gene)| N (speaking to an ordinary BRCA1 gene)| M (speaking to a transformed BRCA1 gene)| MNThis would bring about a kid conveying the change. | NMThis would bring about a kid conveying the transformation. | N(representing an ordinary BRCA1 gene)| NNThis would bring about a typical BRCA1 quality being acquired. | NNThis would bring about a typical BRCA1 quality being acquired. | The above table delineates that there is just a half possibility of either kid acquiring a transformed BR CA1 quality. This implies there is no assurance that Jane’s youngsters will have gotten the quality. Be that as it may, the BRCA1 quality is a quality which, after change, is connected with improved probability of contracting bosom malignancy. The BRCA1 quality has a place with a class of qualities known as tumor silencers. Consequently, when the quality is changed, and can no longer carry out the responsibility it was proposed for and the patient becomes undeniably progressively inclined to contracting disease. As indicated by Cancer. gov, a patient who has a changed BRCA1 quality is up to multiple times bound to contract bosom malignant growth, and an utation of the BRCA1 quality is identified with 10% of all bosom disease cases in Australia. Be that as it may, significantly, having a transformed quality doesn't, in itself, ensure the development of a malignant growth (Geneticshomereference. gov: 2011). The most widely recognized type of testing for a changed BRCA1 quality initiates when a blood test is taken, and the patient’s BRCA1 quality base code is analyzed. On the off chance that there are any genuine defects in the quality code, at that point all things considered, a transformation has happened to the BRCA1 quality, and the patient is educated accordingly (Healthwise: 2011). In any case, this profoundly intrusive test can cause outrageous tension and, if each clinical expert informed family members if malignant growth patients so hereditary testing could be directed, huge numbers of the family members of these disease patients would endure further nervousness, while extra budgetary strain would be set on the effectively constrained assets accessible. Hereditarily, a transformation of any of the tumor stifling qualities, however especially the BRCA1 and BRCA2 qualities, will cause an increasing of the odds of reaching bosom malignancy. Ecological and way of life factors that may advance the development of bosom disease incorporate introduction to electro-attractive or atomic radiation, stoutness, childbearing, hormone substitution treatment, and over the top liquor utilization (PHG Foundation: 2010). Treatment of bosom malignant growth ordinarily involves the use of various alternatives, including chemotherapy, medical procedure, radiation treatment, and hostile to hormonal treatment (Caring4Cancer: 2011). Notwithstanding, while these medicines are very obtrusive, they have been demonstrated to be compelling for by far most of patients and for most patients, there is no other option. After treatment, extra screening is led like clockwork, in order to watch that the disease has totally died down. Much discussion exists with regards to whether bosom malignant growth is a Mendelian or a perplexing issue. In any case, there is more than one sort of bosom malignant growth; the most widely recognized being invading ductal carcinoma. Albeit a few strains of this malady are certainly identified with a solitary quality, different strains, including penetrating ductal carcinoma, have not been seen as connected to any one quality yet rather a mix of ecological variables and various qualities (Caring4Cancer: 2011). All things considered, having a changed BRCA1 quality doesn't ensure that a malignant growth will create, as various other key components would likewise must be available. The relationship that is gone into between a specialist and a patient is, as the Hippocratic Oath recommends, a totally classified and private one; â€Å"Whatever regarding my expert practice†¦ I won't divulge† (Various creators: 1995 adjustment). The Information Privacy Act of 2009 states that â€Å"The use and exposure of hereditary data is possibly legitimized when: â€Å"The wellbeing specialist organization sensibly accepts that there is a genuine danger to the life, wellbeing or security of a hereditary relative of the patient† * â€Å"The use or divulgence to the hereditary relative is important to decrease or forestall that threat† (The Queensland Government: 2011) The law unmistakably specifies that if the lives of hereditary family members of the patient, for example, kids, are truly imperiled, a patient’s secrecy can be broken in the stead of forestalling genuine damage. Be that as it may, in this situation, there is no affirmed ‘serious danger to life’ and all things considered, in the event that Jane’s specialist was to educate her kids regarding her changed quality, at that point his activities could be esteemed similar to an encroachment of Jane’s moral and lawful right to secrecy. Hereditary data is, similar to all other clinical data, a carefully classified issue, and in this situation recollect that a youngster just has a half possibility of having an indistinguishable quality as that of the mother. As there is no affirmed, and consequently ostensibly no genuine, danger introduced, it would probably be esteemed illicit for Jane’s specialist to breech secrecy. Wordnetweb. princeton (2010) characterizes privacy as â€Å"The level of authentic order for documents†¦ accessible just to people approved to see archives so classified†. In the situation being referred to, the main individuals approved to watch records identifying with Jane’s qualities are her PCP, and any specialists that Jane’s specialist wishes to talk about the issue with; in a carefully proficient sense. As per pinoydocs. om, the obligation to caution is â€Å"An moral commitment to tell individuals of a danger†. In this situation, the individuals who are needing cautioning are Jane’s youngsters, as the peril is that they may likewise have a changed BRCA1 quality, which would essentially expand their odds of getting a perilous sickness. There are various reasons that Jan e may have for not wishing to illuminate her kids regarding her transformed BRCA1 quality, for example, a craving for security. Nonetheless, it is imperatively essential to understand that it is extremely unlikely of completely fathoming Jane’s thinking. For instance her youngsters may have been received or IVF, and she may want for this to stay private; a protection which would be undermined if they somehow happened to be tried for the quality. Fundamentally, it is critical to take note of that Jane’s reasons are only that; her own, and as a grown-up, she is accepted to have the option to settle on dependable choices about her very own data, and her choice to not educate her kids must be regarded and consented to by her primary care physician. In the event that Jane informs her kids, there might be various extreme negative impacts. Her youngsters may endure undue nervousness; having the quality doesn't, in itself, ensure the development of a malignant growth. On the other hand, neither one of the children may even have the quality by any stretch of the imagination. Also, connections regularly administer morals, and in the event that Jane’s youngsters were to be educated, at that point the mother/kid relationship may then endure undue negative sentiments, or an absence of trust. In the event that Jane’s kids were to be educated, at that point potential mischief might be stayed away from. Be that as it may, if the kids were to have a changed BRCA1 quality, a speculative circumstance in itsel

William Faulkners Barn Burning - Free Essay Example

Research Essay: William Faulkners Barn Burning Is blood thicker than water? Faulkners Barn Burning is about a sons struggle in a life ruled by conflict and violence at the hand of his own father. The irony of the story is his abusive, criminal father, who values family loyalty above all, creates a heavy burden for his family. The son, Sarty, is put in a very precarious and unfair position of defending his obviously guilty arsonist father. Blood may be thicker than water, however, in this familys case, the cost of their coerced loyalty is their dignity, happiness, freedom and morality. The virtues and complexities in deciding to do the right thing especially when it goes against family loyalty is never-ending. Strangely, by instilling the concept of unyielding loyalty, and to a self-serving, hypocritical father; Sarty matures and develops his own belief system which allows him to become loyal to higher values. The beginning of the story is set in a general store which doubles as a local municipal court. The protagonist of the story, Colonel Sartoris Snopes, Sarty, was attending his fathers court hearing for an alleged barn burning. Sartys father, Abner, is sitting before the Justice of the Peace in this crowded room. Although the hearing between Mr. Harris and Abner Snopes was out of Sartys sight, he could still hear the Justice speak. Sarty listened helplessly, it raised an anger along with a strong sense of loyalty for his father within his heart and mind. The author states, just a little of fear because mostly of despair and grief, the old fierce pull of blood (Faulkner 375). Sarty saw the Justice of the Peace as an enemy who was unfairly persecuting his father, stated in the story, Our enemy he thought in that despair; ourn! Mine and hisn both! Hes my father (Faulkner 375). Mr. Harris accused Abner for burning his barn in retaliation over his hog getting into Mr. Harris corn, not once, but twice. Mr. Harris explained, he returned the hog to Abner and even gave him enough wire to repair the pen to prevent the hog from escaping again, the Justice asks, But what proof do you have, Mr. Harris? I told you. The hog got into my corn. I caught it up and sent it back to himWhen he came to get it I gave him enough wire to patch up his penBut thats not proof. Dont you see thats not proof? (Faulkner 375). Mr. Harris said the next time the hog got into his corn, he would keep the hog and told Abner it would cost him a dollar pound fee (Faulkner 375). That night, a black man came by with a dollar and said, He say to tell you wood and hay kin burn (Faulkner 375). That very night Mr. Harris barn burned to the ground. Mr. Harris insisted the Justice call Sarty to testify because he was a witness to what had transpired that night. Poor, shabby Sarty slowly made his was through the crowded store until he reached the Justice. Sarty was scared, he knew his father expected him to lie about that night. The boy knew he had to lie the old fierce pull of blood loyalty. Whats your name, boy? The Justice said. Colonel Sartoris Snopes, the boy whisperedColonel Sartoris? I reckon anybody name for Colonel Sartoris in this country cant help but tell the truth, can they? (Faulkner 375-376). The Justice of the Peace had deliberately sown the seeds of morality in Sartys mind with those words. The Justice knew what Sarty was up against, torn between the loyalty to a tyrannical father and the right thing telling the truth. The Justice had shown Sarty compassion and understanding by not making him testify against his father in open court. Mr. Harris also demonstrated compassion when returning the hog and giving Abner the wire to fix his fence. These men, who were not family had shown Sarty more kindness and mercy than his own father ever bestowed upon him. It is evident in this story that all kindheartedness received came from outside the family and not from within. The family was nomadic, moving from one dilapidated tenant shack to another was a way of life for Sarty and his family. The Snopes family relocated numerous times because his father made enemies wherever they went. The last plantation they worked was that of the Major and Mrs. de Spains mansion. When Sarty and his father first approached the home of Major de Spain, Sarty finally senses that these dignified people will not stir up ugly, paranoid feelings in his father, and their mansion is blessed with freedom from strife, rendering even the barns and stable and cribs which belong to it impervious to the puny flames he might contrive (Faulkner 375). Abner, feeling envious, immediately creates an altercation between the wealthy de Spain and himself, the destitute tenant. As they walk up the drive, Snopes deliberately walks through fresh horse manure and does not have the decency to clean his shoes before he enters and walks on the light-colored expensive French rug in Mrs. de Spains vestibule. Mrs. de Spain is traumatized by this mans act of blatant ignorance resulting in her ruined rug; and turn out Snopes and son from her house. Later that day, Major de Spain brings the rug to Snopes shack, requiring that it be washed. Rather than permit Mrs. Snopes to clean the rug correctly, Abner orders his bovine daughters to clean the rug using harsh lye soap. Abners mission is to add insult to injury and have the treasured rug destroyed for no other reason than to be cruel. After Major de Spain finds out the rug has been destroyed, he sought reparation for the damaged rug (Haisty 1-3). Major de Spain states, You must realize you have ruined that rugSo Im going to charge you twenty bushels of corn against your crop. Ill add it in your contract and when you come to the commissary you can sign it. That will not keep Mrs. De Spain quiet but maybe it will teach you to wipe your feed off before you enter her house again (Faulkner 382). Again, Abner was getting off relatively easy, however, he did not see it this way. Abner became so angry and vengeful, he took Major de Spain to court over this matter. The Justice of the Peace said, And you claim that twenty bushels of corn is too high for the damage you did to the rug? He brought the rug to me and said he wanted the tracks washed out of it. I washed the tracks out and took the rug back to him. But you didnt carry the rug back to him in the same condition it was in before you made the tracks in it (Faulkner 383). I hold you in damages to Major de Spain to the amount of ten bushels of corn over and above your contract with him, to be paid to him out of your crop at gathering time. Court adjourned (Faulkner 383). Here again, the Justice is nearly bending over backwards to be fair to Abner. All fairness and compassion offered to this family come from outside the family where there are no pull of blood loyalty. It is at this point in Sartys life that he has matured enou gh to act on his own good conscience which invokes his actions to choose right over wrong. Sarty knew his father was going to plan a barn burning that night and he knew what he had to do. As Abner prepares in the night for the barn burning, Abner charges his wife with restraining Sarty. His father knows Sarty can no longer be trusted to assist him in carrying out evil and vengeful deeds. Sarty breaks free from his mothers grip and he can warn the Major of the impending doom. After which, Sarty hears gun shots ring out, he is sure his father and brother have been killed, however, Sarty does not turn back, he keeps running. Sartys cries because he has lost not simply a father but also a person whom he had tried to find the least amount of good. His attempt to convince himself that Abner is brave, is sadly unsuccessful. Sarty finally comes to grips about who is father really was and he did not look back (Evans 27-39). Sartys resolve to strike out on his own rather than return to his family shows the strength of the ten-year-olds convictions. Rather than succumbing to a false hero worship of Abner, Sarty will make his own way in the wide world, despite the plague of war (Ford 527). Blood is thicker than waterthe actual saying is the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. The meaning of this saying is the opposite od how we use it and understand it. The saying means bonds that you have made by choice are more important than the people that you are bound to by blood or the water of the womb. The saying implies the fact that the bonds you choose for yourself can mean much more than the ones you dont have much say in (mystudentvoices.com). By his brave and heroic actions in alerting Major de Spain, Sarty had proven the blood of the covenant, his higher belief system and values, are thicker, more important than the water of the womb which makes family kin.

A Warning Against Hubris - Literature Essay Samples

Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a tale in which one simple action leads to a tumbling of catastrophic events. When the Mariner shoots the Albatross, a bird who has brought him and his sailors good fortune, he does so without reason. In ancient Greek tragedies hubris, or excessive pride, often leads to the hero’s inevitable downfall. Further, in the Catholic faith, pride is one of the greatest sins a person could commit. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner illustrates how these beliefs are held in good faith. Without a reason given to justify the senseless killing of the bird, one can insinuate that the Mariner’s senseless killing of the bird could only be through pride. His self-pleasure of bringing down a great creature was fleeting, as punishment soon bore down upon the sailors. Through his excessive pride, ungratefulness, and ignorance of other’s wishes, the Mariner brought disaster upon himself and his crew. In the beginning of the tale, the Mariner stops a wedding-guest to tell him the story of his defeat, as he is compelled to do. In the story, the Mariner is sailing through an area of mist and ice after being pushed by a storm. The crew was having great difficulty until an Albatross appeared, which cleared the fog and broke the ice to safely guide the ship through the sea. As the Mariner states, â€Å"The ice did split did split with a thunder-fit; / The helmsman steered us through! / And a good south wind sprung up behind†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Norton 445). The Albatross, a great sea-bird, was determined to be a bird of good omen, and was received joyously by the crew. However, the Mariner did not heed their gratitude: â€Å"God save thee, ancient Mariner! From the fiends, that plague thee thus! — Why look’st thou so?† — With my cross-bow I shot the Albatross. (Norton 445-446) In the passage above the wedding-guest is commending the Mariner on his good fortune; however, the Mariner cuts him off in one simple line. He did not provide an explanation for his actions or a reasonable cause as to why he would kill such a bird. It seems to be an insensible act, to slay a creature that has helped them survive. However, the Albatross is a great, rare sea-bird and to slay a great creature is an act worth boasting. Thus, against the wishes of his crew, he shot the Albatross in hopes of achieving glory and status. The Mariner’s crew was outraged at the killing of the Albatross. They cried out in against the crime committed: For all averred, I had killed the bird That made the breeze to blow. Ah wretch! said they, the bird to slay That made the breeze to blow! (Norton 446). The crew saw what the Mariner did not: that the slaughter of a creature who had aided them in their journey was a horrendous crime. However, soon after the Albatross is killed the fog clears; this causes them to doubt the very belief they held so strongly: â€Å"’Twas right, said they, such birds to slay / That bring the fog and mist† (Norton 446). Justifying the crime against a righteous creature named the crew as partners in the crime. Thus, one must hold fast in one’s beliefs, for if one wavers, the doubt may cause one’s downfall. Shortly after, the ship is plagued by a drought and the sea begins to crawl with slimy creatures. The crew begins to fear that the slaying of the Albatross brought evil upon them. They attempted to place the blame on the Mariner by forcing him to hang the dead Albatross around his neck: â€Å"Instead of the cross, the Albatross about my neck was hung† (Norton 447). This simple act of hanging the Albatross around his neck like a crucifix is significant. The act of wearing a crucifix is to show faith; the Albatross hangs around the Mariner’s neck in a grotesque imitation of faith. In reality, he wears the Albatross as an admission of pride and because his crew could not accept their own blame. It can even be taken further to imply that Coleridge is attempting to portray the Mariner as a mock Jesus figure. Just as Jesus Christ bore the sins of his people, the Mariner is bearing the sins of his crew. In this way, the crew hopes to escape judgment. However, the distribution of blame did not work. It soon becomes apparent that the blame that one holds for a crime cannot be erased or handed off, for soon a ship captained by the spirits Death and Night-mare Life-in-Death appear and one by one the entire crew dies. The Mariner describes this horror, â€Å"And every soul, it passed me by, / Like the whizz of my cross-bow!† (Norton 449). It is interesting to note that the Mariner compares the shooting of the Albatross with his cross-bow to the departing of the souls of his crew. The simile made here implies that the Mariner does associate the death of his sailors with his crime against the Albatross, and here is where the reader first realizes that the Mariner does feel guilt for his crime. This is further confirmed when he states, â€Å"And never a saint took pity on / My soul in agony† (Norton 449). Since the Mariner actually committed the slaughter, he bears the worst punishment. While his crew is dying all around hi m, he does not, but is forced to live with his guilt. To illustrate the depth of his guilt, the Mariner states, â€Å"And a thousand thousand slimy things / Lived on; and so did I† (Norton 450). However, in his guilt he appreciates the water-snakes and blesses them, and this small act redeems him. The Albatross that he bore around his neck like a grotesque trophy slipped from his neck and into the sea, like chains being lifted from around him. When the Mariner wakes, his dead crew rises and begins to steer the ship. However, their bodies do not contain the souls that they bore previously; instead, the bodies are commanded by angelic spirits. The ship moves through the water with a supernatural force. After the Mariner faints, he hears to voices explaining the situation. He hears: â€Å"Is it he?† quoth one, â€Å"Is this the man? By him who died on cross, With his cruel bow he laid full low The harmless Albatross. (Norton 453-454) Again, the voice references Jesus Christ as the one who died on the cross in order for the reader to see the Mariner as a grotesque comparison to the Jesus. A second voice warns, â€Å"†¦ ‘The man hath penance done, / And penance more will do† (Norton 454), implying that the Mariner’s torment is not yet over. The Mariner’s suffering continues after he reaches land. By some compulsion, he tells his story to everyone that he meets: â€Å"And till my ghastly tale is told, / This heart within me burns† (Norton 458). The reader could insinuate that this particular punishment is given to the Mariner to serve as a warning to others. Through the repeated telling of his tale, the Mariner shames himself. Again and again the Mariner must admit to his wrongdoing and reiterate what happened to his crew due to his hubris. The very admittance of the crime is the opposite of pride, and for that reason it is a fitting punishment. Furthermore, the spirit could have given this punishment to the Mariner to instill more awareness into others. This is illustrated when the Mariner finishes telling his tale to the wedding-guest and he left the wedding stunned. Coleridge states: He went like one that hath been stunned, And is of sense forlorn. A sadder and a wiser man, He rose the morrow morn. (Norton 459) In this stanza, it is apparent that the Mariner’s tale served as a warning. The wedding-guest learned from the Mariner’s mistake and grew wiser; he is less likely to make the same mistake as the Mariner. Perhaps hubris can only be counteracted through shame, as that is the only way one can truly negate an internal vice. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’s central theme of pride can serve several different purposes. It can serve to warn against the excessive arrogance, the desire for glory, the ignoring of other’s desires and beliefs, and the passing of blame from one person to the other. Through the tragic tale of the Mariner and his crew, the reader can infer that humility and gratitude are always good virtues to possess, one must always be respectful of another’s wishes, and pride can only be negated by shame. The Mariner’s tale teaches the reader many important lessons, and perhaps that is why Coleridge chose to write it down: to serve as a warning against hubris.

In 1798 a new era began in English poetry called the Romantic age Essay Example For Students

In 1798 a new era began in English poetry called the Romantic age Essay In 1798 a new era began in English poetry called the Romantic age. This age provoked the thinking of new radical ideas and thoughts and the writing of these ideas in poems. The poets included Samuel T Coleridge, Alfred Lord Tennyson and William Wordsworth. Some of their ideas and thoughts include: Rebellion against tyrannical and despotic governments and leaders. These feelings were inspired by the recent French and American revolutions. Strong sense of beauty in the natural world around them. Some romantic poets even took to worshipping nature! Sympathy with poor, humble people. Vivid imaginations. The Romantic poets often made fantastic new ethereal worlds. Interest in ancient legends and traditions. A sense of melancholy and loneliness. They often expressed much vitality and emotion in their works. In this essay I will try to see if the romantic poem I will be examining has these ideas incorporated in it. The two poems I will be looking at are both on war but by different authors, with different ideas about war, in different times. I shall examine The Charge of the Light Brigade, by Alfred Lord Tennyson and Dulce et Decorum est, by Wilfred Owen. I will compare the two poets attitudes towards war by examining the context, structure style and language of both poets. The first poem I will be examining is The Charge of the Light Brigade, by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The poem is a secondary account of the infamous charge the English Light Brigade made on the 25th October 1854 in the Battle of Balaclava which was part of the Crimean War. To examine the poem we need to know the historical background of the things it is describing. To put it plainly the Crimean War really had nothing whatsoever to do with Great Britain. It was a war between Turkey and Russia but as Britain was sided with Turkey and did not want Russia to find a colonial interest in British India, Britain helped to fight Russia. Now back to the actual Charge of The Light Brigade. The Charge went wrong because a military leader Lord Cardigan, interpreted the wrong orders from his superior Lord Raglan. The Brigade ended up charging into the wrong valley and came face to face with the Russian Artillery. They were mowed down mercilessly Alfred Lord Tennyson was not a soldier in the Light Brigade, he wasnt in any of the armed forces and he wasnt even present at the battle. In actual fact Tennyson was the Poet Laureate of Britain and was inspired to write the poem based on a newspaper article he had read on the Charge. The main idea Tennyson is providing in his poem is the fact that he thinks the Light Brigade should be honoured by everyone and his poem is one way of honouring them. He is also using the Romantic notion of dying in battle being very heroic. The tone of the poem actually surprised me. I thought it would be like a sombre epitaph, written on a gravestone style but in fact it seems to have the feel of a funeral party which is celebrating the bravery and life of the Light Brigade rather than being sunk in thoughts of death. The poem it self is written in six stanzas of varying lengths. This reminds me of six scenes in a movie, the middle ones being a climax and the ones leading up to it slowly setting the scene for a big showdown. The ones after the climax seem to be the calm after the storm and quietly conclude the poem. The rhyming in this poem is few and irregular but repetition is used a lot in this poem stanzas one, three and five, and it adds to the war theme of this poem e. g. Stanza 1: if you say the half a leagues out loud and fairly fast it will sound like galloping horses, i. e. the Light Brigade itself who were cavalry. I think this is a very good use of literary rhythm and think its very clever. I will now go through the poem thoroughly and pick out important words and language devices. Firstly I believe the narrator of the poem knew from the beginning that the Light Brigade were doomed as he uses the phrase into the valley of death rode the six hundred, line 7. The use of valley of death is actually an allusion to Psalm 23 of the Bible. In this verse it carries on to say I will fear no evil as you are with me. I find this ironic as the Bible is saying that God will protect them but in actual fact the Light Brigade was annihilated. Another thing I find good about this poem is the fact that Tennyson tries to make the poem sound as realistic as possible and is trying to draw the reader in. This is evident from the fact that he uses charge for the guns! line 6 as the command for the Light Brigade. This sounds very real and militaristic and makes the reader feel as though they really have been sucked into a battlefield rather than something like then they charged. Tennyson being a Romantic poet uses many Romantic ideas in this poem. For example when he says theirs not to make replyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦theirs but to do and die, he is saying that even though someones made a mistake and the soldiers know it they, they will still carry out their orders, bravely, even though they will die in the process. While Tennyson believes the Light Brigade are being very heroic he doesnt believe that this is a fairy tale and none of them will die or get injured. This is proved in lines 18, 19 and 20 when the poet says cannon to the left/cannon to the right/ cannon to the front of them. We can gather that having cannons blowing off in front of a group of men with horses is not the best tactic for the British as most of the will die or get injured from having 14 pound iron balls hitting them. Another Romantic notion Tennyson is using is the idea of not giving up whatever happens, even death. For example in line 22 he writes that the Light Brigade were stormed at with shot and shell. This means that even though the soldiers are dying, being injured and watching their comrades fall, each one continues his job to the end. Even today we find this idea romantic and heroic, how many hundreds of movie battle scenes have guys with 6 arrows in them still fighting. Even Tennysons idea of the Light Brigades weapons is Romantic: They are described as having sabres line 27, which may not sound especially romantic, but he could have simply described them as swords. Sabres are traditionally from Arabia and Persia, countries with very big romantic connotations themselves, think Arabian Nights and Omar Khayaam. Therefore I believe that the word sabre is very well used and very subtly put. Also the style of fighting in Tennysons is different: while today we will shoot at an enemy soldier or throw a grenade at him, the Light Brigade werenquot;t doing that; they were flashing their sabres bareline 27. Well it was the Romantic era of warfare as well as we have mentioned. No nuclear bombs, poison gasses or rocket propelled grenades; instead we have velvet uniforms with ornately decorated pistols, curved sabres, medals glinting in the sun and brave battle horses. However Tennyson wants us to believe that the Light Brigade held out for a long time and fought their hardest and were winning some of the time. Not my business EssayThis idea of no gallant charges is enforced in line 5, where Owen describes them as marching asleep. This shows the reader that this army is tired and sleepy and not ready to charge through enemy lines like the Charge of the Light Brigade. Of course Owen is also saying that the soldiers outward appearance is shattered as well as their inward. He does this in line 5 where he says many had lost their boots. Not only does this show the reader that the men are really in a poor state, but it also enforces the idea of how different this is to the pristine uniforms of the Light Brigade. We can also gather ourselves from the poem the fact that walking around without boots in damp, icy, slippery, rat infested trenches will give you painful infections like athletes foot if youre lucky and more serious conditions such as frostbite if youre not so lucky. The true nature of not giving up and carrying on fighting, whatever your injury is shown by Owen in line 6 but men limped on blood shod. This is good as it makes the reader understand that the romanticising of war is completely different from real life. Another idea which is visible in Dulce et Decorum est, but is practically invisible in The Charge of the Light Brigade, is what will happen to the soldiers after their battles are done. In this poem, in line 6 Owen says that all went lame, all blind. This shows the reader that the consequences of signing up for armed combat are much more far reaching than what just happens on the battlefield: you could be maimed for life, or go blind. As I mentioned in my introductory paragraph for this poem, times have changed and weapons have evolved. Killing is no longer done with gold sabres and silver cannons. Now gas line 9 is used frequently. The reader will find out war is no longer a heroic charge but a long, exhausting campaign that you have look over your shoulder, continuously for a shell with poison gas inside. Again tying in with the fact that war has far reaching consequences, we see that simply seeing your comrades die in front of you is enough to give you psychological problems. For instance, in line 15 Owen says in all my dreams, before my helpless sight, he plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. Often soldiers who saw this kind of thing and were badly affected by it were sent to sanatoriums where trained army psychologists would help them get over it. Certainly nothing like this is seen in The Charge of the Light Brigade. This is very effective piece of ammunition to use in Owenss fight against romantic ideas of war which are so far from the truth. Owen definitely is not a romantic because in his poem he provides many graphic representations which Tennyson did not. For example in line 19 he says that one of the injured soldiers had white eyes writhing in his face. Owen has got to the point and hasnt dilly dallied about going on about heroics; he has got to the point and expressed his view. Again this is good as it describes the reality of getting injured in a war to the reader, and it doesnt seem very nice or heroic. Owenss view of how horribly painful war is for the soldiers is expressed and strengthened in line 22 where he describes the injured soldier as having froth corrupted lungs. This will help the reader find out that the young soldiers didnt die heroically but more like horribly. If we probe a little under the surface, the word corrupted could be used by Owen in a political sense and not just medical. He could be talking about how young men are corrupted by snazzy, persuasive recruitment posters, back in their homeland. According to Owen the root of the war is glorious problem is traced back to childhood. In lines 25 and 26 he says my friend you would not tell with such high zest, to children ardent for some desperate glory. This is good as it makes the reader think back into their own past and childhood and think of any war related triumphs or games they may have done or played. It could also be referring to the soldiers being young and naÃÆ' ¯ve and the recruitment posters gradually selling them these lies, in the hope that they will join up and think they are heroes. Finally in the last line of the poem goes as far as to say that dying as a hero and dying for honour in battle are downright lies. In lines 27 and 28 he says the old Lie: Dulce et Decorum est Pro patria mori. This phrase means it is sweet and fitting to die for ones country and was first used by the Roman playwright Horace thousands of years ago. It is still quoted by military leaders today in basic training and before battles. I think Owenss view on this phrase is that it is very dangerous and should not be told especially to desperate and impressionable children. This point of view is a hundred percent different to Tennysons and I need not explain why. I like this poem not only as a piece of good poetry like The Charge of the Light Brigade but also its morals and the poets beliefs are that of mine unlike The Charge of the Light Brigade. It is very effective in carrying across its message of war being bad and not being honourable to die in one. It shows you that the poet thinks young men are lured into war by generals who just sit on the sidelines and will die healthily in their sleep decades after the war. It shows us what happens to the ordinary men who join up, their expectations from childhood and the real thing. This poem has also made me understand something I wondered about before reading it: why there are people whose jobs are army psychologists and why there are buildings used by the military called sanatoriums. As I come to the end of my essay Ive learnt two very important points of view that were used in the past. Firstly about the chivalrous Romantic era on which countless war movies have such ideas in. Honour and fighting till the end whatever the outcome are the main ideas. This will certainly appeal to people who want to hold that point of view but for a realist like me I see through the flashing sabres and the valley of death and see butchered men and mourning families at home. Tennyson never incorporates that in his poem. Secondly I come to the deeply dark and realist first hand views of Owen who explains to me the real story and no beating about the bush. His views are crystal and have made me think rather than the non human termed, honour for our land thoughts of Tennyson. Owen actually made me think about the men being the uniforms. To sum up I like both poems very much but its clear to me whats real and whats not, whats about human beings and not soldiers and all the word suggests brave, never sick, willing to die and finally whats moral to me as a human and whats not.

How Insignificance Shaped Me free essay sample

One day my friend asked me a great question, what would be the worst thing someone can realize as an individual in his lifetime? I thought about it for several minutes, I always do when questions with any sort of implications are posed. I thought of many things: realizing that you’re adopted, that God never existed, that life is an illusion, that I’ve been chewing someone else’s gum for the past half-hour, which is highly improbable given I hate gum more than I hate cockroaches. So seven crazy thoughts later, I replied that realizing that you’re insignificant is the worst realization to be made as an individual. Exactly as I was saying the words, I was realizing that I was (still am) insignificant, which can be highly oppressive for anyone, especially a teenager stung with insecurities, because insignificance can do two things, it can either serve as a breather as it can exempt a person from any responsibility really, or it can drive a person to complete and utter madness, and my brain, broody as it is, opted for the second choice. We will write a custom essay sample on How Insignificance Shaped Me or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When I realized that I was insignificant, I tried to caliber myself by comparing what I’ve achieved this far to what people, who are about my age, have achieved as well. For some reason I thought of Taylor Swift, I am incapable of humming any of her tunes, but I know that she has achieved more than thousands of people have achieved combined and that she matters to a large number of people. It made me see how small and inconsequential I am. If I decide to kill myself one day, there’ll be the traditional three-day funeral, thirty or so people will cry, learn to forget me, and my manifesto will be obviously be used against me, whereas if Taylor Swift decides to commit suicide on a Wednesday night, it’ll be eight million people’s worst Thursday, it’ll be Hollywood’s July 4th, and her manifesto will be displayed in museums after being auctioned for millions of dollars, and it will make so much sense that people reading it will want to kill thems elves as well. From that day on, I was in a very strange place of constant awareness of my being irrelevant—a miserable feeling. But I was also on an unclear, vague quest to be relevant, another miserable feeling because I had not defined relevant and what it meant to me. I had to define it, otherwise there is nothing concrete to reach and organically, a sentiment of failure will subside. I described significant as being of importance to strangers, people who are outside my immediate space. For instance, when I’m walking down a street in NYC or Ouagadougou, someone feels comfortable pouring their heart out to me and telling me that I changed their lives, even be it in the smallest way. If I’m able to achieve that or something remotely close, I’ll consider myself successful. I have what it takes to attain that goal, I do, but like any teenage gifted underachiever will say, high school is in the way. Maybe we are procrastinating or maybe we’re scar ed to not find any substance underneath the safety blanket that is a misplaced self-confidence, but I know this much, post-high school life is the catharsis and the path to materializing any dream. It is our chance to start over and be bold with our choices because not only is it the only way to make a choice but there is nothing to conform to, every single person wants their fifteen minutes of fame and every single person matters in that sense. College is our shot to being significant and finally having that conversation with that stranger in Ouagadougou. If I wasn’t great and went by unnoticed in high school, I intend on radiating in college.

The Hitchickers Guide...3 Essays - , Term Papers

The Hitchickers Guide...3 The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. Thought many of the concepts are slightly abstract and obscure, the book itself is a truly great work. The basic idea is that the day we meet our adventurous crew is the single worst Thursday of Arthur Dents life. Sadly, it is not just Arthur who will be having a bad day. You see, it is this Thursday when the earth gets destroyed. Of all the billions of people on the planet, there was only one who knew what was to take place, and he himself was not even from earth. Ford Prefect, best friend of Arthur is a smooth talking quick thinking person for the remote planet of Betelgeuse five. As you were probably able to infer, Ford Prefect was not the name given to him by his parents, but instead the name of a car that was never popular, which he chose as his moniker, as to better fit in with the humans of earth. Our story begins with Arthur waking up early at his London flat (it was a British book). This was just like any other Thursday, except that outside, a demolition crew was beginning to destroy his house so that they will be able to create a highway bypass. This was news to Arthur. He did not know how they could do this without even warning him first. Upon questioning the foreman of the job, he was informed that the plans had been on record in the planning office for months. Sadly, the plans had been kept in the cellar where there is no nights, or stairs for that matter, in a disused lavatory, in the bottom of a locked file cabinet, with a sign that says Beware of the leopard. Arthurs decision at this point was to lie in front of the bulldozer, so that, without killing him, it would be impossible to destroy the house. Just at this point, Ford Prefect enters the scene. He tells Arthur that it is imperative that he goes to the bar with him, because after he tells him the news, he will need a stiff drink. Arthur explains the situation, and quickly Ford comes up with a plan. He makes a deal with the for eman that, since with Arthur there, they would not be able to do anything all day, they have resolved to just stand around and do nothing all day. So, it was not important weather or not Arthur was actually present. So they agreed that they would not knock down his house until he got back. Arthur could not decide whether or not to trust him. Ford assured him he could trust him to the end of the earth which was about ten minutes. Unknown to Arthur, ford was a writer for the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, a type of encyclopedia chronicling the high and low points of every planet, and how to get about them for free. He had been doing research on earth for the last several years. Recently he had received a transmission over his sub-ether radio, which told him what was to take place in just a few short minutes. Arthur and Ford hurried off to the bar, and Ford explained what was about to happen. Ironically, the planet was set to be destroyed in order to build an interstellar bypass. And who better to destroy the planet, than a fleet of Vogons. The Vogons were a race from the outer edges of the spiral arm. They had virtually no conscience, worked for cheep, had hugs ships of mass destruction, and had perfected a type of poetry which was so horrific, when read, the writer's small intestine has been known to crawl out of their throat and strangle them. Well, the Vogons came, and made short work of our blue/green planet, but before that happened, Arthur and Ford were able to hitch a ride and stow away on one of the Vogon vessels. As you would assume, Arthur is fairly confused at the whole situation. Ford explains to him that he is from the planet of Betelgeuse, which, as anyone would suspect continued to surprise and confuse

Free Essays on How A Case Researches The Supreme Court

The vast majority of cases reach the Supreme Court only as appeals from lower federal court decisions or from the highest state court. These cases come to the Supreme Court in one of two ways – on appeal or by writ of certiorari. A few cases start at the Court because they fall under its original jurisdiction. When petitions for certiorari come to the Court, the justices or their clerks identify cases worthy of consideration and then place them on a list. At a conference, the justices review and discuss the selected cases, and then vote on which cases to accept for decision. When the justices accept a case, they also decide either to ask for more information from the opposing lawyers or to rule quickly on the information that was provided. Cases decided without further information are either returned to the lower court for a decision or announced with a per curiam opinion. After the Court accepts a case, the lawyers on each side submit a brief. After the briefs are fil ed, a lawyer for each side is asked to present a thirty minute oral argument before the Court, in which he or she summarizes the key points of the case. On Fridays, the justices meet in conference to discuss and decide the cases they have heard. Then, the Court issues a written opinion stating the facts of the case, announcing the Court’s ruling, and explaining its reasoning in reaching the decision. Some people criticize the fact that the Supreme Court is not very democratic because nine people speak for the entire country. These individuals, critics argue, are ultimately responsible for settling disputes and interpreting the meaning of laws. Through judicial review, they examine the laws of local, state, and national governments and cancel them if they violate the Constitution. The Court may also review Presidential and Congressional policies. In addition, when the Court applies the law to specific disputes it often determines what national poli... Assessment Essay Example for Free

Assessment Essay Initial assessment- the starting part, used to decide what is known, what needs to be taught and what can be assessed. Formative assessment- this stage is where the learner is still in training and requires feedback on how they are progressing. Summative- used to judge completion. Whether you have passed or not. Holistic- clustering of assessments based on the grouping of a work role, rather than stand alone. Functions of assessment in training – Identify the skill gap – Design the training – Deliver the training – Plan the assessment – Assess – Feedback – Either move on to the next part of training or go back and re do the previous assessment. This starts from the minute you get a new learner signed on. I do this by, setting out a training plan, giving the training, deciding with the learner when we both feel they are ready to be assessed and then do the assessment. With Sonya, she came from another salon where she had already done her level 2, she was about to be signed on to level 3. Before we got her signed on we done an assessment on a colour and a cut to make sure she was competent at level 2. 1:2 Key concepts and principles of assessment Reliability: By using the criteria and qualification and credit framework any assessor working independently should come to the same decision when assessing a learner. The learner should have been given the appropriate training and be competent to do the assessment. Validity: Is the work valid to the unit? The learner should be watched at all times to make sure the work is authentic. Assessments show us, what the learner is capable of and where further training would be required. It would also show if the learner needed any extra help. 1:3 Responsibilities of the assessor – Make sure the candidates logbook is marked of when an assessment has been passed. – Provide opportunities for assessment and make sure you book time out in your column. – Be fair to all candidates, avoid any discrimination, comparing one against the other. – Assess the learner against the national occupational standards and not your own opinion of what the standards should be. – Consider the needs of the individual candidates; one might have a different learning style to the other. Learning difficulties should also be taken into account and help appropriate given where needed. – Plan and assess assessments with candidates. Make sure learner and assessor think it is the right assessment to be done and that the learner is capable of doing the assessment. – Place the learner under no undue pressure. If the candidate does not feel good about doing the assessment you should encourage them, if as an assessor you think they are capable of passing the assessment. But do not apply pressure as this could make the learner worry or feel stressed out by this. – Check and ensure all the evidence is valid, authentic, current, sufficient and reliable. Make sure the work is valid to the unit and accurate, the learners own work, the work is consistent and of the appropriate nvq level criteria and is not a fluke. The work should also be current, i.e. if the learner has transferred salons and had some assessments already signed off you should make sure they are currently competent. – Give constructive feedback. Using â€Å"complement sandwich† Positive comment Critical comment Positive comment Make sure you include the learner to give self assessment so you know how they think they have done. When giving your feedback always start with â€Å"how do you think you did?† Always give feedback promptly and record all assessment decisions and evidence clearly and fully so that everyone can always look back and see what has been said and done. Also in case there are any disagreements on the outcome you can look back at the records. – Agree future action plans with the learner so that both the learner and assessor know what the next stage will be. – Any discussions with the learner should be carried out in a professional manor. During meetings with the learner you should review the progress of assessment plans and determine where additional learning and training is required. I have recently had an issue with one of my trainee’s, she did not want to be taught anymore, and just wanted to be assessed on her cutting. She felt she had had enough training , although I didn’t. As she felt very strongly about this I allowed her to do a model we were going to use as training as an assessment, I did this so she would understand that she needs more training. Once she had completed the assessment I checked the cut, and explained to her where she had gone wrong, and also explained to her that with a little bit more practice she would be able to be assessed on models similar to what she had done and would be able to be marked off on them. She has agreed to have a little bit more training and agreed we will decide together in future when she will be assessed so as not to waste models. 1:4 Regulations and requirements relevant to assess hairdressing. – Realistic working environment. Must develop realistic management procedures that incorporate a ‘salon image’. – All assessments must be carried out under realistic commercial pressures and on paying clients. Assessments should be completed within the commercial timescale. Candidates must be able to achieve a realistic volume of work. – The space per working area conforms to health and safety legislation. – The range of services, professional tools, products, materials and equipment must be up to date and available for use. A reception area for clients to be greeted must be available. It must also include a payment facility. – A retail facility must be provided. Assessment. (2016, Sep 20).

Folic acid food fortification is associated with a decline in Essay

Folic acid food fortification is associated with a decline in neuroblastoma - Essay Example Neuroblastoma is one of the most common cancers affecting children today, forming 8%-10% of the total seen from birth through age 14 years.   It affects one in every 6,000 to 7,000 children in North America (Nutra ingredients.com, 2003). It is a disease in which cancer cells are found in certain nerve cells within the body. Neuroblastoma typically begins in the abdominal area either in the adrenal gland (located just above the kidney) or around the spinal cord in the neck, chest, or pelvis (Pressinger & Sinclair, N.D.). Studies show that folic acid food fortification has more than halved the incidence in Canada of the deadly childhood cancer neuroblastoma. Chemically Folic acid has the molecular formula C19H19N7O6 with a molecular weight of 441.40. The scientific name of folic acid is N-[p-[2-Amino-4-hydroxy-6-pteridinyl) methyl] amino] benzoyl]-L-glutamic acid. It is a complex organic compound present in liver, yeast, and natural sources; it also may be prepared synthetically (RxList, 2004). Metabolically, folic acid is converted to coenzyme forms required in numerous one-carbon transfer reactions involved in the synthesis, interconversion and modification of nucleotides, amino acids and other essential structural and regulatory compounds (Bailey, et al, 2003). As an essential cofactor for the de novo biosynthesis of purines and thymidylate, folate plays an important role in DNA synthesis, stability and integrity, and repair, aberrations of which have been implicated in colorectal carcinogenesis. Folate may also modulate DNA methylation, which is an important epigenetic determinant in gene expression, maintenance of DNA integrity and stability, chromosomal modifications, and the development of mutations. (Kim, 2004). Daily ingestion of 400  µg of folic acid alone during the preconception period reduced a womans risk of having a fetus or infant with a neural-tube defect. The
